This quaint, historic, gold rush town comes to life with special activities for the entire family.  Have a photo taken with Santa at the Historic Hotel Leger and enjoy a Horse Drawn Hay Ride down Main Street.  Merchants will be offering special activities such as face painting by Leslie Vasquez at Petroglyphe Gallery;  Reindeer Games at McHale’s Revival and Complimentary Holiday Food and Drink at Moke Hill Nuts & Gifts, Dixie's Feather Your Nest and Renegade Winery.  Get creative at Ed & Brenda's with Ginger-Bread House Decorating, Children's Crafts at the Mokelumne Hill Library or Make and Take Ornaments at ACME ART. Children can mail their "wish list" to the North Pole at the Mokelumne Hill Post Office.  Mokelumne Hill's Holiday Open House is a chance for everyone to join in and celebrate the spirit of the season.  Feel the warmth of small-town pride and the rich heritage of this historic gold rush community.  All activities are FREE.

Rounding out the day’s events from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm, enjoy an opening reception at Petroglyphe Gallery for artist Doug Lawler’s “The Island of ZA, A Fable Without Words” Chapters Two and Three.

Take someone’s hand and follow the enchanting adventures that artist Doug Lawler has imagined, of a girl and a dog whose lives constantly become complicated, in a place with magic in the air, on a mythical island. Viewers will be taken away into their own realm in a fable without words by the artist who encourages this journey through fine art dry point etchings. This exhibition will be a preview of The Island of ZA, Chapters Two and Three, consisting of roughly 70 images The exhibit will be available for viewing through February 18, 2018. The complete story will be told in soft sepia images with one color foldout in his soon to be published book The Island of ZA, A Fable Without Words.

Doug Lawler, began his wordless fable nearly 2 years ago, creating a voyage that takes the viewer deep into a shapeshifting world through at least 100 finely detailed, complex, sepia-toned, dry point etchings. Lawler enchants us with a magical girl, a mischievous dog, and images on a mysterious island evoking fear, bewilderment and wonder. Our hearts take this journey along with the characters in this fantastical fictional world.

“My intent was that the story to be simple and complex at the same time. But most importantly, that it might delight those of us who enjoy a good adventure.” -- Doug Lawler

As part of the reception, sample wines from 1850 Wine Cellars of Sutter Creek as well as a variety of cheeses. Meet Doug Lawler and learn about his process and the inspiration behind this collection.  Join in a celebration of the season at Petroglyphe Gallery!  This event is FREE.
