Snowshoe Thompson Would Have Been Proud!
White Pines, CA...Last Friday, Hazel Fischer Elementary School’s 4th and 5th graders got to try their hand (and feet) at the art of snowshoeing. Students were getting “cabin fever” from weather-delayed ski trips, cancelled basketball games, and from their play area at school being reduced to a narrow strip of wet blacktop. So 5th grade teacher Sue Rosenquist and principal Brett Loring paid a visit to Ebbett’s Pass Sporting Goods. Bill Reynolds gave the school a...
great rental deal on 23 pairs of snowshoes along with some snowshoeing secrets. The next day, students and staff eagerly ventured out to the ball field (which hasn’t been seen for weeks now!) and strapped on the shoes. As soon as they became comfortable with walking in snowshoes, students raced across the field and enjoyed some great exercise and a new P.E. offering. Returning to the warm classroom afterwards, students learned about Snowshoe Thompson and his treks through the Arnold area as he delivered mail in rain, sleet, or snow. As much fun as they had in the snow students tended to agree that Mr. Thompson’s job would have been a strenuous one!
