Restrictions Lifted on James E. Roberts Bridge on SR-120 Today at 2 P.M.
TUOLUMNE COUNTY – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), has recently completed a $26.1 million rehabilitation project on the James E. Roberts Memorial Bridge that spans the Don Pedro Reservoir on State Route 120 (SR-120). One-way traffic controls that have been in effect during the construction are scheduled to be lifted at 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 22, 2017 (today).
The project benefits include:
Eliminates inconsistent roadway surface conditions
Provides a modern and safe bridge for vehicles and bicycles
Puts an end to frequent deck repair projects
Reduces exposure to maintenance personnel to safety risks
Extends service life of the bridge an additional 40 years
SR-120 is a popular route for the 4 million annual visitors to Yosemite National Park and is a vital economic link for Tuolumne County.
The completed bridge rehabilitation which got underway in July 2016, provides a new bridge deck and railings, strengthens the existing girders, improves the bridge's seismic strength and reduces the need for frequent repairs. Exterior steel girder painting that was not originally planned, was also accomplished, saving time, money and avoiding future traffic delays.
One way-traffic control was in effect throughout the majority of the project allowing traffic to continue to use the bridge while it was simultaneously being rebuilt. Nighttime closures were required during 2016 winter months while precast deck panels were placed. The James E. Roberts Memorial Bridge was built in 1970 and is named for a former Caltrans Chief Engineer who made significant contributions to seismic design of concrete structures during his 50+ year career as a public servant.
Caltrans would like to extend its appreciation to residents for their patience during this project which will improve the efficiency of travel and safety for motorists in Tuolumne County.
