Who's Your Hero?~By Hanna Heath
Angels Camp, CA….A hero is a person who, in the opinion of others, has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal. Today, 15 students from Copper and Mark Twain Elementary visited Foothill Village to share with them their Kindness Hero Essays….
An annual assignment is given to all students’ kindergarten through the eighth grade. The assignment is to choose a person/persons in your life who are hero/heroes. Then write an essay explaining experience and reasons why they are your kindness hero. After students completed their assignment and turned in their papers each teacher chooses their best three papers and turns them into the school committee. The school committee reads every one of the essays and chooses 17 of the best papers. This year 17 students were chosen but only 15 students were able to make the reading.
“My kindness hero helps me look for inspiration to become a better person.” “A kind person is like an investment; the more you put in the more you get out of it.” These are just a few creative lines that were spoken from one of the student’s essay. Many people say that children have a mind of their own, and this is true.
All 15 students had a heart warming, tear watering story to share with the elderly community. “Each one of these children has a very high self-confidence, the kind of confidence that all people wish they could have. Its take a real person with real experiences to get up in front of a large crowd and share very personal information,” says Foothill resident Jane Lang.
When a child experiences something that may be scary, traumatic, or exciting they often put their experiences into the most powerful words; as shared above. Words that adult’s wouldn’t use in a normal conversation, words like inspiration, desire, open arms, and tender. After speaking with Mrs. Smith a teacher from Mark Twain, she shared, “To zero in on the people who mean the most in their lives is not only a great opportunity but it’s a rewarding experience.”
Below is a list of all the different “Kindness Heroes” the students shared:
Mom
Dad
Girls Scouts Leader
Grandma

Baseball Coach
