Head for the Hills as Ebbetts Pass/SR-4 Opening At Noon Today!!

Lake Alpine, CA...Caltrans crews have removed the winter snow, cleared the debris, made necessary repairs and will open State Route 4 (SR-4)/Ebbetts Pass National Scenic Byway at noon today (Friday, May 4, 2018). Ebbetts Pass rises to 8,730 feet, making it one of the highest passes in the Sierra with grades in excess of 23%, far exceeding typical highway grades of 6%. Our local maintenance crews would like to remind everyone to please drive safely over the pass. It’s still freezing at night and there could be icy spots.

Please be aware and alert as obstacles and icy spots may occur unexpectedly. Our crews are patrolling the route regularly to remove rocks and anything else that may have fallen into the roadway as the slopes de-thaw, but you never know what could be around that next blind corner.

Caltrans crews responsible for the road opening extend their best wishes for safe summer traveling to those who enjoy the recreational opportunities this part of California has to offer.

More info

Be prepared: Winter weather and road conditions can change rapidly. Motorists should expect the worst conditions and be prepared when traveling in areas subject to hazardous conditions. Caltrans reminds drivers to carry chains and to be prepared for winter driving conditions. We recommend carrying blankets, water, food, a shovel, gloves, a flashlight, and sand or kitty litter to provide traction in case your vehicle becomes stuck.

Be Advised: There are minimal services available and limited mobile phone service along the high elevations of Ebbetts Pass. Visitors can purchase gasoline in Bear Valley on the west side and in Markleeville on the east side of the pass.

Check ahead: Please check local highway conditions before planning to travel to the high country by visiting the Caltrans QuickMap site at quickmap.dot.ca.gov or call the Road Condition Hotline at 1-800-427-ROAD (7623). Also, the radio may be tuned to Caltrans Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) at 530 AM, 1610 AM or 1670 AM for information.
