The 2018 Fair & Jumping Frog Jubilee Was Dedicated to the Calaveras Frog Jockeys & The Kitchell, Nash & Ziehlke Families

Frogtown, USA...(Angels Camp, CA)...The Calaveras County Fair board of directors voted unanimously to dedicate the 2018 Calaveras County Fair & Jumping Frog Jubilee to the Calaveras Frog Team. It was the 90th anniversary of the Frog Jump. On this auspicious occasion the board thanked the Calaveras Frog Jockeys for keeping the event alive locally. The Calaveras Frog Jockeys which encompass the Kitchell, Nash and Ziehlke families, was honored on May 17 at 7:30 p.m. on the main stage.

In light of the events of the weekend some of these photos are especially poignant. Our prayers continue with the Nash Family!

It is so much time and work to obtain frogs for the event. The frog jump was a dying activity. Even out of town teams have been phasing out as time goes by. I think these families are keeping tradition alive and it is needed. The whole fair needs local involvement. They are not better than other families, but they help the fair. If the young man died from an overdose, he is not the only child from here that has been impacted by drugs. From many families . I just wish he had lived through it

Who said he died of an overdose?
        So sad.
Does anyone know what happened? We’d like to know how to respond and what can be learned by our younger generation about this tragedy.

Seriously, what merit does this activity have? Innocent creatures are ripped out of their riparian environments so some human can screech and yell at them and take glory in making it scared enough to jump? What if that human put some ffort into making the world a better place instead of this stupid tradition? I thnk it is an embarrassment.

Oh this is the best our county has to offer? Making a frog jump? Wow, what a contribution to humanity. Be proud!

Seriously? Maark Twain spent maybe 14 months here and penned one short story about Calaveras County from a story he overheard in a bar. Not really much of a legacy.

This story is very offensive! I'm very offended! How can these *bleep*s say that those families are better then mine! How cold hearted and rude! Shouldn't of expected anything else from the worst local website in the mother lode!

Praise should be handed out equally!! Since it's not here and it's basically saying those families are better than mine it's very offensive! Rude and disrespectful as well!

Stories like this should be taken down! My family is as good as there's! Still should not have expected anything better from the worst of the worst local website!

So you don’t think writing a check for a good cause or say a scholarship is the right thing to do? Good thing for a lot of the local nonprofits and high school graduates that other successful people feel differently. Seems tome at least a few of these families have benefited from the largesse of others.

You know what this article taught me? Just how divided a community we’ve become.

Got that right, but it's not limited to this county, you can see it at every level. It used to be no matter what group you belonged to, you still respected the other side and still made an effort to meet part way. Neither side is willing to do so at this point. What's missing? How about good ol' fashioned morals and learning from the mistakes of others in the past so that we don't repeat them. How about turning off the news that has resorted to mainly reporting doom and gloom, making things seem worse than they've ever been to keep your attention, and ignoring all the good and uplifting things that people do everyday for their community, such as the ones discussed in this article. Some may not find this particular sport appealing, but the end result is more tourist dollars spent in our community, which we all benefit from, directly or indirectly.
