John James Corrigan, 38 of Mountain Ranch Identified as Deceased in Officer Involved Shooting.
San Andreas, CA...On 7/5/18 at approx. 2145 hrs. the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls regarding a male waiving a gun and acting strangely in the roadway on Mountain Ranch Rd near Rocky Rd between San Andreas and Mountain Ranch California. Callers described the gun as being either an AR-15 or shotgun. Three (3) Calaveras County Sheriff’s Deputies and three (3) CHP Officers responded and arrived on scene. The Deputies and CHP Officers encountered a white male subject matching the description on the side of the road with a long black object that appeared to be a rifle or long firearm. The subject was standing in an area between two separate homes. The long black object had a laser type sight attached. The subject pointed the object and laser toward the law enforcement officers. The subject was reportedly refusing to comply with the officers orders at the time. In fear for their safety as well as the safety of nearby residents, law enforcement officers fired their weapons striking the subject. Medics were called to the scene. The subject was later pronounced deceased at the scene.
Update 7/6/18 at 1500 hrs.
Investigators from multiple agencies are continuing the investigation into last night’s Officer Involved Shooting. The deceased subject’s next of kin has been notified by the Calaveras County Coroner’s Office. The deceased suspect in this case has been identified as John James Corrigan, 38 years old. The suspect has addresses in Chatsworth in Southern California and Mountain Ranch near the scene of the shooting.
John James Corrigan was a registered sex offender and convicted felon. John Corrigan has arrests and a criminal history extending from Southern California up into the Central Valley of California. John Corrigan has previous arrests for 261 PC Rape, 11550 H&S Being Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance, 23152 VC DUI and 415 PC Disturbing the Peace. As noted above, Mr. Corrigan was also convicted of 288 PC Lewd or Lascivious Acts with a Child Under 14 years of age in 2004.
Below is a photo of John James Corrigan;
The weapon John Corrigan was holding and pointed at the law enforcement officers on scene is shown in the photo(s) below;
The weapon is an automatic air rifle manufactured overseas. This type of weapon is capable of firing multiple metal projectiles in a rapid fire or fully automatic mode. The weapon appears similar to high powered rifles that are also manufactured overseas. The weapon also had after-market attachments including a laser aiming sight attached to the bottom of the gun and a barrel shroud affixed over the barrel.
Additionally, the gun had a red dot sight attached to the top rail. All of these attachments make this weapon appear to be similar to an assault rifle. Law Enforcement Officers arriving on scene would not be able to determine the type of weapon possessed by the suspect. This information is supported by 911 callers who reported the firearm to either be an AR-15 or Shotgun.
The Deputy Sheriff’s involved in this incident have been placed on paid administrative leave which is routine in this type of incident.
The multi-agency investigation team will continue their work until this case has been completed.
