Update on Officer Involved Shooting of John James Corrigan

San Andreas, CA...The following media release is to update information on the officer involved shooting that occurred on Mountain Ranch Road on 7-5-18. As previously reported, Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and CHP Officers responded around 2145 hours to multiple 911 calls regarding a man waiving a gun and acting strangely in the roadway.

Upon arrival Law Enforcement Officers encountered the suspect, now identified as John James Corrigan, who was brandishing a black rifle that had laser type sights attached to it. This weapon was later identified as an automatic air rifle manufactured overseas but it had several aftermarket modifications which made it appear more to be an assault rifle.

Corrigan pointed the red dot laser and rifle at law enforcement officers during the encounter and then turned to move towards several residences in the immediate area. Three law enforcement officers (2 Calaveras County Sheriff’s Deputies and 1 CHP Officer) fired their weapons at Corrigan.

Twelve (12) total shots were fired by the three officers. An autopsy was conducted on the suspect John James Corrigan. Toxicology results are still pending. Corrigan was struck three times, once in the arm and twice in the lower right side and middle of his back.

This is consistent with deputies’ statements that suspect Corrigan was refusing to comply with the officers’ orders and the shots were fired at the time suspect Corrigan was turning to move towards a residence in the immediate area.

Officers on scene would have additional concerns for the safety of oncoming motorists driving in the area as well as the safety of any occupants in a second house nearby.

As part of the investigation, detectives served a search warrant at suspect Corrigan’s residence on Mountain Ranch Road. A firearm and controlled substance was located and seized from that location.

The multi-agency investigation team will continue their work compiling details of the incident until this case has been completed.

There is no further information at this time.

OK, folks. Let us show some understanding for Mr. Corrigan. He suffered from mental issues. The family is surely devastated by his death, they were also surely devastated by his illness as well. I'm not justifying his actions, but calling for some sympathy here for him as well as his family.

We should also have understanding for the officers who had to make the decision to take a life. I personally know two officers who had to take a life. In both situations, their actions wer completely justified. Both officers were deeply troubled by the actions they had to take and both wish they never had to draw their weapon, and wish that they will never have to do so again.

This was a tragic event that touched many lives. Be kind, please.

Agree, thank you. It's unusual to see comments on this site that are not mean spirited and just stupid. Quite a few families are affected by this and deserve community support.

you point any fire arm looking device at any officer(s) and fail to comply with orders you are going to be or should be shot. good grief he failed to comply. what do you suggest milk and xanax? hey he made the choice. he knew what he was doing. obviously he did not care about his own life nor that of others in this issue. he got what he wanted. there is no reason to tell anybody how they should feel. people have values and morals of their own so they need not have you tell them how they should be feeling. get over it, move on and learn from it. don't put yourself where this person did. on the wrong end and side of the law. your crying will not bring back the dead. they know nothing now nor can speak to you from the grave. dead is dead.

    Ecclesiastes 8:10
Then too, I saw the burial of the wicked who had come and gone from the holy place and were praised in the city where they had done so. This too is futile.

I’m sorry for the family’s loss, but my sympathy is with his victim(s).
This man had been convicted of multiple rapes, A DUI and had been convicted of sexually assaulting a child under the age of 14.
        God bless his victims.

no one has a perfect life. suspect, law enforcement, you, me.
*bleep*ty day for the suspect, heath issues, life, etc.
*bleep*ty day for the officers of the law, no one goes to work with guns drawn.
*bleep*ty day for you and me. We pay the price for our safety, the suspects actions and the hours spent for law enforcement. It affects our way of life.

Pray for you, me, officers of the law and mostly the suspects family. Peace on earth.

12 rounds and only 3 hit flesh? Sounds like these officers need target practice , I'm suprised no one else got shot while the were trying to so called protect the community.
