Firefighters Continue to Make Progress on Donnell Fire

Pinecrest, CA...The fire has increased in size to 35,684 acres and continues to burn on the eastern perimeter into the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness. There is a potential for spot fires to the east as southwest winds are expected today. Firefighters are focusing on building and strengthening fire lines on this eastern edge. This portion of the fire is in remote, inaccessible country and crews are spiking out to work in these areas. The main fire camp has moved to Bear Valley and will be supporting the crews. The satellite camp in Kennedy Meadows remains to support firefighters working on the southeast portion of the fire area. Firefighters are also looking at the Highland Lakes area to the north for contingency planning as the fire could make a run up the Arnot drainage that leads to that area.

The fire closure area remains in effect. Firefighters are actively working on hazard trees and fire suppression rehab work in this area so that it can eventually be re-opened to the public. Please respect this fire closure and stay out of this landscape for your own safety and that of the firefighters moving through the area. The landscape in the fire area has been dramatically altered and you may view this from your car – but please don’t stop while we continue to work between Eagle Meadow Road (5N01) and Sonora Pass. The only exception is Kennedy Meadows including Baker and Deadman Campgrounds.

Trail Closures:
The Pacific Crest Trail is closed between Highway 108 and Highway 4.

The fire area is closed under Fire Closure Order STF-16-2018-011. This order opened Highland Lakes Road (Forest Service Road 8N01) to Tryon Meadow, Pacific Valley Campground and access to Bull Run Lake (but this trail is closed at the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness boundary).

Forest Closure Area: The forest area impacted by the fire remains closed. Please check Fire Closure Order STF-16-2018-011 on the Stanislaus National Forest Webpage. This includes all residences and campgrounds along Eagle Meadow Road (5N01), the Highway 108 corridor and the Clark Fork Road area. Property owners may obtain permits for access through the Summit Ranger District.

OPEN:
Highway 108 for through traffic only. Kennedy Meadows Resort is open.
