Four Area Youth Will Be Irish Day Grand Marshals

Bear Valley, CA...Four outstanding area high school students who symbolize the future leaders of Calaveras County have been selected to be the Grand Marshals of the Murphys Irish Day Parade to be held in the historic gold rush town on Saturday, March 15, at 11 a.m. parade organizers JoAnna and Bob Reagan felt it was important to honor all the young people of the area who involve themselves in their schools and their communities learning skills and developing traits that will serve them well in their coming endeavors......

“If Calaveras County is going to continue to be a special place we will need a new generation of civic-minded men and women who will carry us along for many years,” states Bob Reagan. “We are fortunate that we have organizations such as the Future Farmers of America, 4-H, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts that promote community pride and instill values.”

These four students have been chosen by their organizations to represent them in this year’s Irish Day celebration.

Courtney Melenchek, 18, is a 4-H County All Star. She has been in 4-H for ten years and has been involved in the rabbit and the sheep projects. She is also a member of the Bret Harte High School Yearbook staff. A resident of Hathaway Pines, Courtney is the daughter of Pete and Jane Melenchek. Her career goal is to become a physician’s assistant and work in a hospital or clinic.

Sarah Pesout, 17, is the daughter of Ann and Jim Pesout of Mountain Ranch. She is a Senior Girl Scout and has completed her Girl Scout Silver Award. In scouting she has served on the planning board and is a program aide. Her school activities include playing varsity soccer. She is also an actress currently in a melodrama for the Friends of the Valley Springs Library. Upon graduation she will attend the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she will study molecular biology.

Hillary Watts, 17, a Bret Harte High School Senior is the Chapter Reporter for the school’s FFA and has worked on many FFA projects including assisting at Lumberjack Days in West Point. A Copperopolis resident, she is involved in many community and church activities. She has been a Kids Camp counselor for the community’s Parks and Recreation and volunteers at her church’s nursery Sunday school. She is the daughter of Nancy and Steve Nelson, and Marcus Watts. She plans to study nursing at California State University Stanislaus and hopes to work in pediatrics.

Josh Hecocks, 16, is in the tenth grade at Bret Harte High School where he is a member of the cross country and swim teams. Last year he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, his Eagle project being the creation of a sign for Michelson Elementary School. He was a Cub Scout for five years and has been a Boy Scout for four years. He has earned 39 merit badges plus a bronze and gold palm. His other activities include being in The Rock Youth group. He is the son of Rob and Barbara Hecocks of Murphys. His father is also his scoutmaster. After high school Josh wants to attend Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

The Grand Marshals will travel the parade route in style riding in a 1915 Packard seven-passenger touring car driven by Rob Miller and owned by the Miller family.

Murphys Irish Day is an annual celebration presented by the Murphys Business Association.
