Calaveras Big Trees Association Announces 2008 Seminar Schedule

Big Trees State Park, CA....The Calaveras Big Trees Association (CBTA) has scheduled four seminars for 2008 which are free, fun and open to the public. Mark your calendars and do not miss out on this excellent opportunity to learn about fish and fishing, fantastic outdoor experiences, local native plants, and what is happening in and with our forests......

All seminars will be from 10:00am to 12:00pm at the Jack Night Hall, located near the Visitor’s Center, in Calaveras Big Trees State Park. A $6.00 park admission fee applies, so plan on making a day of it. Pack a picnic lunch; take a hike; and most of all, enjoy the Park!

The seminars are scheduled as follows;

Saturday, April 26th – “Fish & Fishing” by Pete Otteson. Pete is the long-time outdoors writer for the San Joaquin Record. He is a conservationist and sportsman. He will talk about both river and lake fish and fishing in the Central Sierra. Pete enjoys sharing his experiences in the out-of-doors with all ages. For many years, he has worked with children thorough the San Joaquin County Office of Education.

Saturday, May 3rd – “Hiking Across The Sierra” by Lee Terkelsen. Lee is a recently retired school teacher who also produces videos and DVD's on various outdoors topics. The video he will present covers his trip from the Central Valley across Sequoia Park, west to east across the Sierra. He visits the General Sherman Tree and the Giant Forest and continues on a 75 mile hike along the High Sierra Trail to Mt. Whitney. Lee is a board member of the Sequoia Natural History Association.

Saturday, September 27th - “All About Lichens” by Dr. Tom Hoffstra. Dr. Hoffstra will present his program on the under-appreciated lichens. "All About Lichens" is an introduction to lichens, their ecological and ethno-botanical significance, and how to recognize some local species. Tom teaches a variety of short courses on plants at Columbia College.

Saturday, October 4th - "Our Disappearing Forests" by Bruce Castle. Bruce is a member of Ebbetts Pass Forest Watch and will use aerial and ground photographs to illustrate timber harvesting practices in the Central Sierra. The program was scheduled in 2006 but cancelled due to weather conditions.

Should you have any questions about these seminars, please call the Calaveras Big Trees Park at 209- 795-3840. You may also contact Steve Stocking, the seminar coordinator at 209-754-9029.
