Lookout Extreme Makeover-Home Edition....Chapel in the Pines is at it Again!!!
Arnold, CA....Chapel in the Pines, on May11th through May 18, 2008, is on another rebuilding mission. Some may recall the mission to Long Beach, Mississippi back in March 2006. Long Beach, MS was one of many communities hit by Hurricane Katrina. Many homes were worked on that week. Many lives were encouraged by their loving acts of kindness......
This year, Chapel is on its way to Greensburg, Kansas. Greensburg, KS was a town of between 1375 and 1500 before a mile-and-a-half wide tornado struck in May 2007. 95% of the town was destroyed by 200 mph winds and ten were killed. Their 8 or 9 churches that were to have been used during disasters were destroyed. Many people were left with only what they had been wearing at the time the tornado struck. The school, hospital and downtown are gone, and 960 homes were damaged or destroyed. Many people there are living in 250 FEMA trailers, which are grouped together just south of Hwy 54.
Steve & Sharon Flake viewed a MASH-type hospital facility, Quonset hut tents with a big Hospital sign and flags flying. There was one mini-mart gas station from which most of the residents buy their groceries. It was able to function quite soon after the storm. They saw the bank building that looked fairly intact, until they drove behind the building and saw that the entire back was missing. There were blocks of bare foundations, and trees just starting to leaf out. They talked to a woman from Greensburg’s County Assessor’s Office (in temporary trailers) and her main concern for her town was (and is) the coming winter, that it not be terribly cold for the folks in the trailers.
Everyone has an opportunity to help in the Lord’s work through prayer, giving and being an active participant in Greensburg, KS. We ask that each of you pray for this mission trip as we move forward.
For any questions on how you can help, please contact Chapel’s office at (209)795-1064.
