Calaveras Students Flex Their Math Muscles

San Andreas – On May 21st, students from all across Calaveras County flexed their math muscles at the 39th Annual Math Mini Bowl competition at Calaveras River Academy/Mountain Oaks in San Andreas. This year students ran into the competition as their schools were announced, music pumping and spotlights dancing. Excitement mounted as each team prepared to bring their best math skills to the table. Each year the Calaveras County Office of Education and the Teichert Foundation sponsors this event.





Over 100 5th and 6th grade students competed from nine Calaveras County Schools, representing:
Avery Middle School, Albert Michelson Elementary, Christian Family Learning Center, Copperopolis Elementary, Hazel Fischer Elementary, Jenny Lind Elementary, San Andreas Elementary, Mark Twain Elementary and Mokelumne Hill Elementary.

The Math Mini-Bowl is a homegrown Calaveras tradition with competitions in three categories: The BLITZ (an individual competition), the BOMB (a five-member team event), and the HUDDLE (a pairs competition). All tests are based on the new California math standards.
Students who placed in each event were:

5th Grade BLITZ

4th Place: Sawyer Maurer – Albert Michelson Elementary

The student with the highest scoring individual was 5th grader Brayden Bowersox from Christian Family Learning Center, with a score of 96% in the 5th Grade BLITZ competition. Brayden was also on the winning 5th grade Huddle team with teammate Aaron Jack with a perfect score of 100%.

“The students’ performance was amazing this year and we are so grateful for the teachers and parents who support this event year after year,” said CCOE Communication and Student Events Coordinator Debbie Strand. “There was so much energy going into the event this year making it competitive and fun!”
