Calaveras Bomb Squad and a Military Explosives Unit Were Busy In the Big Trees Area....Over 100lbs of Explosives Were Recovered!~ By John Hamilton

Big Trees, CA...Reports are coming in that the Calaveras Bomb Squad and members of an armed services explosives unit spent quite a bit of time at a residence in the Big Trees area. We just spoke with Captain Clay Hawkins of the Calaveras Bomb Squad and they were called in at the request of a detective who was working a related case. They found quite a stash of explosives. There were several 105mm Howitzer shells, 8 40mm rounds, Numerous 20mm rounds and one Sabot Rounds There was also...

40 lbs of Black Powder, quite a few pounds of chemicals that could be combined to make explosives and 20 lbs of illegal fireworks.

The explosives unit from Travis Air Force Base was called in to help with the military ordinance and the Bomb Squad worked the rest of the material.

The explosives were detonated a couple of miles from the residence in an area coordinated with the Forest Service. In speaking with Capitan Hawkins one of their main concerns was if a fire had rolled through the area. The artillery shells and the black powder since it was stored in a compressed manner would have had the effect of a large amount of TNT.

The detectives are still working the case and we will provide additional details as they become available on the owner of the materials and his possible intentions if any. As we have mentioned before Calaveras County is lucky to have one of the finest Bomb and Hazardous Disposal Units in Northern California.
