Two New Fire Engines Now in Service in Angels Camp ~By Hanna Heath
Angels Camp, CA….Last year the Angels Camp Fire Department in Angels Camp applied for and received a Community Development Block Grant Fund Money from state and federal funding agencies. Angels Camp Fire Department had two engines before receiving the grant money, engine 213 and engine 215. Engine 213 was purchased in 1998 making the engine over ten years old, which needed to be retired as a full time response engine. The department started brainstorming and came up with the idea of purchasing two new engines that could better serve the community during an emergency situation……….
The two new engines, engine 211, and 212 cost a total of $399,000 plus tax. Engine 211 was received in October of 2007 and was placed in service in December of 2007 and cost a total of $280,000. Engine 211 is now the full time structure fire and normal response engine. Some of the new features that this engines has compared to the old engine 213 is, auxiliary pump, which allows for pump and roll ability.
Engine 212 was received in February and went into service at the end of last month. The engine cost a total of $119,000. The new feature that this engine offers to the department is a remote control water nozzle, allowing two firefighters to put out a fire without stepping into unsafe conditions.
The grant money has not only allowed the department to purchase new engines, but has allowed them to hire full time firefighters Mon-Fri. “By hiring full time firefighters we have increased the level of service to our community,” shared Fire Chief Scott Kenley. They have also been able to compensate for the firefighters who were already part of the department. The grant money has also attracted more interest in the department and has the local community wanting to become members.
“The community has a different mindset on the department now, we are real and professional firefighters,” shared lieutenant Tom Starks. The department is excited and proud of their new engines and staffing and is ready for any emergency situation.
