Murphys Man Arrested After Hours Long Standoff & Firing Shotgun Rounds at Deputies

Murphys, CA...On 04/04/2020, at 2116 hours, Deputies responded to a residence on the 4000 block of El Camino Casale Road, to investigate an alleged domestic violence incident. When the first units arrived on the scene, they viewed a man armed with a shotgun in the residence. Units set-up a perimeter and made contact with the man inside. After communicating with the subject, a female exited the house with the man pointing the weapon at her. Deputies made numerous contacts with the man by telephone in hopes of him surrendering.

The male subject was identified as 48-year-old Alexander Koorkoff (Murphys). Koorkoff told deputies that he would shoot at law enforcement if they do not leave and would repeatedly hang up on authorities. Multiple units responded to the scene, including Angels Camp Police Department, California Highway Patrol, and Fish and Wildlife. The Calaveras County Sheriff’s SWAT and Crisis Negotiation Teams also responded.

Negotiations with Koorkoff lasted several hours throughout the night. Koorkoff continued to make threats to Law Enforcement and refused to surrender. SWAT introduced a less than lethal law enforcement product in an effort to get Koorkoff into custody. Koorkoff fired multiple shotgun rounds at deputies from inside his home. Deputies returned fire. The suspect exited out the garage with his hands up yet refused to comply with orders. The suspect lifted his shirt to expose to deputies that he was armed with a handgun. Koorkoff made several sudden and quick movements with his hands towards his firearm, asking officers to shoot him.

In an effort to take him into custody Deputies fired a less-lethal round striking the suspect. The suspect quickly retreated into the residence. The SWAT team made additional less than lethal efforts to extract Koorkoff. Negotiators re-established telephone communication, and Koorkoff exited out the front door. Koorkoff refused to comply with orders and physically resisted arrest. Koorkoff was taken into custody after a short struggle.

Koorkoff was taken to a local hospital. Koorskoff remained in the care of the hospital due to non-related medical issues until this afternoon when he was transported to the CCSO for booking. Koorkoff will be booked into the Calaveras County Jail for 245(a) (2) PC, 273.5 (a) (1) PC, 69 PC, 148 PC, 664/190 PC, 417 (a) (2) PC, 664/190 PC.

In accordance with policy all Deputies involved in the officer-involved shooting have been placed on administrative leave as standard protocol. The Calaveras County District Attorney’s Office responded to the scene and has oversight over their portion of the investigation. No officers were injured as a result of the incident.

Detectives served a search warrant on Alexander Koorkoff’s residence and currently processing the scene.

There is no further information at this time. The case is still an active investigation.
