Sonora Pass High Country Collision Takes Lives of Two San Jose Men

Kennedy Meadows, CA...Between the dates of June 15, 2020 and June 16, 2020, at an unknown time, a 47-year-old male from San Jose was driving a 2006 box truck along with his passenger, a 29-year-old male from San Jose, on westbound State Route 108, west of the Mono County line at an unknown speed. While traveling down the grade, the driver failed to negotiate a sharp right hand turn in the roadway. The vehicle traveled across the opposing lane and off the roadway where it collided into a tree and a large granite rock.

At approximately, 12:30 PM a passerby noticed the vehicle off the roadway and notified local authorities. Upon the arrival of medical personnel, both occupants in the vehicle had succumbed to their injuries. It was determined neither of the occupants were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the collision. This collision is still under investigation and alcohol and/or drugs are not determined to be a factor.

I forgot how steep 108 can be downhill in places. Low gear and then some. Not a good road for trucks, worse trucks with weight in the back. Sorry someone had to lose there life.

DID CHP REPORT TO CAL TRANS OR COUNTY ROAD DEPARTMENT TO REMOVE THE TREES AND LARGE ROCK AND PLACE UPDATED SAFETY BARRIERS AND POST WARNING SIGNS WITH REFLECTORS AND BLINKING LIGHTS? WE DO NOT WANT THIS TO HAPPEN TO ANYONE

Get serious....it would take half the state budget to put safety barriers in front of all the boulders and trees in the high country. Why not let's all be wise about our driving? Take personal responsibility. You're a grown up, right?

Good Point also. We all pay into the high gas tax. Let us push for safer roads and reminders for safe driving.

Very true and tragic, again just have to wonder if belts would not have changed the outcome in this case
