Eight New Cases of COVID-19 Confirmed in Calaveras County Calaveras County, Health Officer Urges People to Slow the Spread

San Andreas, CA...Calaveras Public Health is seeing an alarming and accelerating trend of community spread in the County. On Tuesday, June 30, 2020, Calaveras Public Health reported eight additional cases of COVID-19. This is the single largest one-day case count in the County since the pandemic began. “What we are seeing in Calaveras County is the beginning of a significant outbreak of COVID-19 in several regions of our community. Widespread community transmission is now taking place in the Valley Springs area, and other locations are also reporting increasing disease activity,” said Dr. Dean Kelaita, Calaveras County Health Officer. “If things continue at this rate, we are in very serious risk of overwhelming our local hospital and limited ICU capacity.”

Neighboring counties are seeing rapidly increasing coronavirus activity. San Joaquin County reported 294 new cases on Monday June 29th alone, with 3,856 total cases and 133 currently hospitalized. “This increased disease burden experienced in larger nearby counties is contributing to higher rates of infection among our populations traveling to these areas to work or shop,” stressed Dr. Kelaita. “Those infected in neighboring jurisdictions can bring the virus home and infect others around them.”

Due to high rates of COVID-19 infections, San Joaquin County was placed on a state of California watch list, and over the weekend, was ordered by the state to re-close all bars, and to better monitor mass gatherings. Public health officials attributed the rise in cases to social gatherings and people not adhering to coronavirus guidelines. They warned if hospitalizations reach surge capacity, more places and businesses could close up again.

“We are at an important moment in Calaveras County where we need to take immediate action to slow the spread of COVID-19. Businesses that have reopened must closely adhere to health directives. If you must be out, practice physical distancing and wear a cloth face covering at all times you are around others,” said Dr. Kelaita.

“Calaveras will be in a similar position as our neighbors if we don’t get a handle on this outbreak quickly”, said Dr. Kelaita. “As of now, I am not ordering any further closures, but additional community mitigation actions may be reintroduced if these disease trends continue”. A county Health Officer may impose orders that are directed at protecting the health of the public.

He went on to add that the simple and scientifically effective methods that the public can do prevent the transmission of coronavirus within our community are wearing a cloth face covering when going out in public, hand washing and using hand sanitizer, as well as maintaining physical distance of at least 6 feet between all non-household members at all times. Those at higher risk of complications from COVID-19 are encouraged to avoid going out unless absolutely necessary. “If our community can do these simple actions every day, we can beat this pandemic and protect the most vulnerable members of our community”, Kelaita concluded.

The best way to avoid exposure to the virus is to:
 Stay at least 6 feet away from people outside of your household
 Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
 Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
 Wear a face covering over your nose and mouth if you are in public and around other people

To date, Calaveras Public Health has reported forty confirmed cases of COVID-19. Of those confirmed cases, seventeen cases have since recovered. There have been no reported deaths to COVID-19 in Calaveras County at this time.

2437 Recovered 17
Deaths
0 TOTAL CONFIRMED CASES 40

Calaveras Public Health staff is investigating the new cases to determine any possible persons who may have had close personal contact with the positive individuals. Close contacts will be contacted by the health department, assessed and monitored for signs and symptoms of COVID-19 illness. Those with close contact may be recommended to be tested for COVID-19 infection. If you live in Calaveras County and get tested for COVID-19 and test positive, please call Calaveras Public Health at (209) 754-6460.

No-cost testing for COVID-19 is available to anyone who would like to get one. The OptumServe COVID-19 testing site located at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds is open Tuesday-Saturday from 7:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Testing is available to those age 12 and older. Walk-ins are not accepted at this time. People are highly encouraged to register online by going to www.lhi.care/covidtesting. People without internet access should call (888) 634-1123. Starting July 7, the testing site will expand its hours from 7:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday-Saturday.

Symptoms can appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19:
 Fever or chills
 Cough
 Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
 Fatigue
 Muscle or body aches
 Headache
 New loss of taste or smell
 Sore throat
 Congestion or runny nose
 Nausea or vomiting
 Diarrhea

COVID-19 case details will be updated on a weekly basis and will include age, gender, and location. Think about it.. These are residents testing positive, not people who are visiting or coming to their second homes.

This is from residents who are not following the face covering recommendation or social distancing guidelines. Go into stores and you will see many stubborn locals refusing to comply.

Also interesting that the # of tests added since Friday was only 37, with 8 positives. So I suspect at least some if not all of these people were tested because the Health Dept. asked them to (contact tracing).
As an aside, "Upper Hwy 4" is meaningless. If it's Murphys, Forest Meadows, Arnold, Dorrington, whatever, why not tell us? You do with West Point, for God's sake.

Lets all go to Hogan and Commanche and Pardee and hang out with the beaners, BLM'ers, and white trash from Stockton. Lets all rub up against each other, camp, hang out, party, and catch Covid from all the losers at our local lakes. Lets not forget the campers at Melones. They are a bunch of peaches too. Woohoo, here comes covid.

Most if not more locals and business are and were wearing masks way before this. The only thing that has really changed is the traffic coming up from the valley has tripled. Sit anywhere on one of the hwys that connect the valley to here. Especially the hwy4 corridor. Be real. Trailers, motorhomes, off road vehicles sales have surged and where are they going to go with them,in the hills. They stop buy food and gas. You really don't need to be too intelligent to figure out the major factor of an increase.

So do you comply? Or if you're in a crowded store with narrow aisle, do you just pass by without waiting for the person to move on? Some folks especially the elderly take some time in their decision making process while looking at a product. Actually there really is no form of logistics for spacing in stores-so what is a person to do? We don't live in a Nazi-type or Big Brother type of society with a bunch of "clip board cops" running around like crazy to make sure everyone follows the rules (or would you like to volunteer for that?).
We all, as humans. just do the best we can do. We certainly cannot tell the person next to us what to do especially when we don't know him/her. That person like us has just as much of a right to be in his/her space in a site like a store-the register line or in produce or wherever. I notice that some stores have an X or some other icon to instruct folks to stand there and usually located at six foot distances like the post office counters and some stores. Kudos to them for doing that and thinking of others! Since I'm a senior I can go into markets early and get my stuff and get out. Then I go home and SIP. Otherwise if I'm out and about, I wear my mask and try to practice the social distancing the best that I can. I usually do my business and errands on week days and stay away from the crowds that way on weekends.

I went to ACE in Arnold yesterday and they did not let a customer in because she was not wearing a face mask. I was very glad to see that.
The same day, I went to Big Trees Supermarket, also in Arnold, and I saw a group of young people not wearing face masks. I went home and decided to call the store. I spoke with Customer Service and asked the lady that answered the phone, why did they let those customers in without face masks when it is now mandatory to use them in California? She told me, that it is not a law, therefore it is up to the customer to wear, or not to wear them.

Actually, tracers in CA have found that the single most cause of the virus spread was extended family get togethers. Basically, graduations and birthday parties in recent weeks as families began to reach out to more relatives.

Brian Goss is plowing ahead with his 4th of a July bash at Murphys Hotel! He isn’t requiring masks, either.
People of Murphys, if you give a sh_t about our health, our town and businesses, please call our Sheriff. Please call Merita Callaway. Call your friends and neighbors. Tell them to stay away from Murphys Hotel. It’s going to be crawling with tourists from the regions which are being closed back down to stage 1 shut down. They’re bringing covid up here with them, and Brian Goss is actively encouraging them to do so.
Call Brian Goss. Tell him exactly what you think of him.

His last name is Goss, I believe. But he is GROSSly incompetent in encouraging groups to congregate, whether visitors or locals. CA tracers have already determined that the number one reason for our reason uptick in numbers besides bars were family and other social gatherings. So - why not expose your loved ones to the double whammy of getting together with extended family at the local townie bar?

If you had ever watched that hotel and bar do-ever show a few years back where the hotel was chosen venue, you would never eat at that place. There were tubs of special sauces pulled out the freezer that had expired dates or weren't dated at all. And all of that was under this ownership so little reason to believe standards would change once the production crew departed.

Anyone surprised by Brian Goss hasn’t been paying attention for the past decade. He’s always been selfish and immature. He’s a 40 year old permanently mentally stuck at 19.
A 19 year old lives for today, doesn’t think about the future, or how their personal decisions could hurt others. They can’t think beyond their own desires. That’s Brian in a nutshell.
He’s also a complete idiot. It doesn’t matter how much you spell out the dangers of covid for him, he’s not going to get if. He’s just not smart enough to grasp it, and sadly, even if you try to personally explain the community dangers, he just won’t care. It’s not about him, so he won’t listen.
Brian is all about Brian. Unless Covid knocks him on his ass personally, he won’t care.

It gives me hope to read comments like yours. Thanks for telling the truth. If you read his FB page, you'll find a long post, where he calls them "magic masks" and completely downplays how serious this is. He is anti-mask, and from what I understand, so is his staff. Why would anyone risk their health, or the health of their friends and families, by going there? I hope this event gets shut down. Any local business that is this irresponsible, and doesn't give a flying donut for the health of our community, deserves no respect. I hope he gets slapped with a huge fine. He's a flaming mask-hole.

Merita probably gave the Go-Ahead for the Peddler's Fair because A) She likely won't attend and B) Doesn't care about other people and how COVID is spreading and C) has a basic disinterest in Arnold. Wait! That is too complimentary. She has a streak that causes her to actually harm Arnold. She doesn't allow it to flourish like Murphys in that she actually fosters policy (PD - Planned Development) that retards improvement. Note: I didn't say growth. I said improvement, The business owners cannot clean up and repair their businesses and buildings due to the onerous, stupid, senseless PD - all fought for by Merita and unbelievably maintained my her minions such as Plotnik. If they decide to come into this century with a plan to do things right, we all will be (pleasantly) surprised and supportive. Do the right thing, Merita.

Merita's PD is an overlay that costs business and building owners a non-refundable application fee of several thousands of dollars, of which they are guaranteed nothing. So try to fix a roof, put up a new sign that meets code, or do any kind of improvement and have this hurdle. Not going to happen. This is why you see so many vinyl banners and make-shift kind of temporary, sub-par attempts at solutions. The good people of Arnold deserve better than this medieval mockery masked as management. Only if you are a pot growers or dispensary will Merita move quickly. We deserve better. Those who voted for her missed the mark and now are suffering with the consequences. We should have a chance to change. Now.

That's not the way I understand Newsom's order. He has ordered restaurants, bars and tasting rooms closed in 19 counties with high covid infection rates. Most of our neighboring counties in the valley and bay are included on that list. Tuolumne and Calaveras are NOT! So everyone from the infected counties wanting to eat, drink, have fun and socialize this weekend will be headed our way. Sounds like Mr. Goss, and other restaurants and bars here are in for a big payday this weekend! Welcome to all our visitors!!!! :)

Well the first thing Dr. you should do is focus on Covid Springs, and "upper" HWY 4 wherever that is, and reinstate drastic measures to stop the spread. Lead by using these places as an example. There are a lot a dumb asses out there, so as long as it is left up to them to protect others, we will not see any improvement. Mandate face masks in every public place. Very few people wearing masks.

Overhead in Murphys from a young woman trying to entering a boutique, "I don't believe in masks." When did it become a belief system as opposed to following the best medical advice currently known?

The owner of the boutique should have said, "In that case, I don't believe I'll let you come in!"

Quarantine Valley Springs! The majority of these cases are from the filthy community of Valley Springs and some of these people have second homes in Arnold. Keep your filthy asses in your own city.

So, county public officials across the board have let us down.No real clear to the point with meaningful direction has been given, only a soft sell. Some jurisdictions around the country that have similar tourist influx have In fact made and taken very strong decisions and action. They STOPPED all traffic in and out of their jurisdictions, end of story. That gave them the ability to deal with local issues, control, health care and enforcement. Which directly address those that don’t feel precautions are necessary and support and enforcement to all businesses establishments. So until the county shows that they have some stones, cinch those seat belts!!

I don't mean to make light of such a serious issue but cannot help but think of that Monty Python scene - "Bring out your dead. Bring out your dead!!" These anti-maskers keep it up and we will be going back to life in the 1800s.

Visitors need to behave when visiting here - don't drive the wrong way in the market parking lot, clean up your trash after snow play, or summer play, don't park on the sides of Highway 4 where it is no parking, including other roads i.e., Natural Bridges, don't turn left from Blagen Road onto Highway 4 - be respectful of where you are visiting - disrespect is what is irritating to permanent residents.

In 2019 there were 3,540 deaths involving motor vehicles in all of California. To prevent these types of deaths we've adopted stringently enforced, mandatory, seatbelt and motorcycle helmet laws.

In the first 6 months of 2020 we've had over 6,000 deaths from Covid-19 in California. Despite this, our elected representatives and law enforcement officials refuse to adopt and enforce mandatory face mask requirements in public spaces.

Coronavirus has been declared a worldwide pandemic and has claimed over 125,000 American lives.

Our senior county health officer has found there is uncontrolled community spread in at least one community within our county.

Does this make any sense? Any comments Supervisors? Sheriff?
Are you folks responsible for the health and safety of our communities?

My niece in Alaska just shared that they, too, are reaching their highest daily case numbers as well. Their governor will likely try to put a mandate in place not unlike ours. Terrifying when a state like AK with natural, geographic borders are having difficulty in containing.

Americans are dying. Meanwhile, Trump is largely mute on the subject (unless to blame others) or wear a mask because (his words): (1) It's up to individuals to know how to protect themselves; (2) I don't want to trample on anyone's freedom. And (3) from which any thinking person can infer: I don't want to alienate my political supporters and lose their vote. Wearing a mask might mean I admit that I might have been wrong in understanding the strength of COVID.

Thank goodness we have moron business owners who won't enforce mask regulations, and most of all thank goodness for our fellow citizens who are selfish, ignorant jerks that won't wear a mask in public spaces. Go to any business in Valley Springs and you'll witness it personally on a daily basis. Thanks for nothing you selfish bastards!

Picket the hotel this Saturday starting at noon that is when the Murphys parade starts. Maybe after the parade those folks will join the picket line to save our town, Any way my family will not be eating at the hotel if Goss has his party ever again. Locals need to boycott this virus hole. How do you like that Brian?

Supporting Brian Goss is not the same thing as protecting people's lives - literally. You can support Brian properly by talking with him and prevailing upon him the importance of Sheltering in Place, requiring guests and staff to where masks which does go a long way to prevent the spread of this things. COVID-19 is no joke. It takes victims down quickly, even the strong ones. I know. It has taken several of our family members a month to recover. We did the right things. We were infected simply by the coughs of a visitor.

What in hell do you expect if County Government is to weak to require face coverings for everybody in public places, except of course those with a doctors note that they should be exempt. Everyone else, everywhere. It will only get worse so long as the elected and appointed officials are more afraid of wing it backlash than the health of the community

To the City Slickers who want to blame the increase on locals, how f-ing stupid are you. The population in Calaveras exploded when the lockdown in the Bay Area and the Valley started because the City Slickers did not want to follow the rules and they left the City for there second home or began renting in the foothills . The traffic is absolutely horrible and you City Slickers drive like S-it.

When there is 100 vehicles parked along Parrots Ferry Rd at Natural Bridges do you really think It’s enjoyable to visit the site. Most City Slickers are not polite nor know what personal space is.

Calaveras County is no longer a nice quiet place to live, for all you Valley and Bay Area people who moved here to get away from the hustle and bustle of the cities or the COVID rules you brought your screwed up attitudes with you.

Once you idiots stop acting like your crap don’t stink you won’t make such big fools of yourselves!!!!
