Calaveras County Health Officer Expresses Alarm Entering Holiday Weekend With 13 New Cases of COVID-19 Confirmed

San Andreas, CA...Calaveras Public Health continues to experience an alarming and accelerating trend of community spread in the County. On Thursday, July 2, 2020, Calaveras Public Health reported 13 additional cases of COVID-19. This is the largest increase of positive cases in any reporting period in the County since the pandemic began. “As we enter the Fourth of July holiday weekend, it is important for the public to refrain from group activities and large scale gatherings that have been shown to spread COVID-19 infection”, says Dr. Dean Kelaita, Calaveras County Health Officer. “What we are seeing in Calaveras County continues to be a significant outbreak of COVID-19 in several regions of our community. Widespread community transmission is now taking place throughout Calaveras. I want to emphasize the critical importance of people taking proper precautions and act as if everyone you come in contact with has COVID,” said Dr. Dean Kelaita. “If things continue at this rate, we are in very serious risk of overwhelming our local hospital and limited ICU capacity. If this trajectory of disease continues, the virus is on the cusp of spiraling completely out of control in the Foothills”, the doctor added.

“If you must be out, practice physical distancing and wear a cloth face covering at all times you are around others,” said Dr. Kelaita. “Additional community mitigation actions will be reintroduced if these disease trends continue”. These are the actions such as the forced closing of businesses, restaurants, wineries, and other group gatherings like we have seen in neighboring counties. The State or a county Health Officer may impose orders that are directed at protecting the health of the public.

Kelaita went on to add that the simple and scientifically effective methods that the public can do prevent the transmission of coronavirus within our community are wearing a cloth face covering when going out in public, hand washing and using hand sanitizer, as well as maintaining physical distance of at least 6 feet between all non-household members at all times. Those at higher risk of complications from COVID-19 are encouraged to avoid going out unless absolutely necessary. “It has never been more important for the community to do these simple actions every day, so we can beat this pandemic and protect the most vulnerable members of our community”, Kelaita concluded.

The best ways to avoid exposure to the virus are to:
 Stay at least 6 feet away from people outside of your household
 Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
 Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
 Wear a face covering over your nose and mouth if you are in public and around other people

To date, Calaveras Public Health has reported fifty-three confirmed cases of COVID-19. Of those confirmed cases, eighteen cases have since recovered. There have been no reported deaths to COVID-19 in Calaveras County at this time.
Test Results Received
2812 Recovered 18
Deaths
0 TOTAL CONFIRMED CASES 53

Calaveras Public Health staff is investigating the new cases to determine any possible persons who may have had close personal contact with the positive individuals. Close contacts may be contacted by the health department, assessed and monitored for signs and symptoms of COVID-19 illness.

No-cost testing for COVID-19 is available to anyone who would like to get one. The OptumServe COVID-19 testing site located at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds is open Tuesday-Saturday from 7:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Testing is available to those age 12 and older. Walk-ins are not accepted at this time. People are highly encouraged to register online by going to www.lhi.care/covidtesting. People without internet access should call (888) 634-1123. Starting July 7, the testing site will expand its hours from 7:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday-Saturday.

Symptoms can appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19:
 Fever or chills
 Cough
 Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
 Fatigue
 Muscle or body aches
 Headache
 New loss of taste or smell
 Sore throat
 Congestion or runny nose
 Nausea or vomiting
 Diarrhea

COVID-19 case details will be updated as the information is obtained. To receive information and resources related to COVID-19 visit the Calaveras County COVID-19 website at https://covid19.calaverasgov.us. Follow Calaveras Public Health on Facebook www.facebook.com/calaveraspublichealth/

The outbreak will continue with the out break of tourists and 2nd home owners/renters and boaters in Copperopolis, Upper Hwy 4 and on or Melones and Lake Tulloch, most of which are not wearing masks.

Asking people to wear masks is just lame. Make it enforceable by law, and then you will see enormous compliance because most are younger folks who don't want the law snooping around....oh yea lets not forget about fireworks...

YES I BELIEVE MOST LOCALS ARE RIGHT! In fact I and others, practice the suggested guidelines of social distancing and the masks, etc. Today we are having a small gathering of LESS THAN 10 people in my neighborhood and we are all "COVID 19 free." We're like family around here and can't afford to go visit our distant relatives. It's stated that it's alright to be in a group of 10 or less people for whatever reason. I have been called every word imaginable on this, but I say they are just words and folks can't tell me what to do. Now if a proper authority like a cop makes orders, then I will heed to that. I don't think we will get to that point around here though. I do feel for the long time and permanent residents of Arnold though with this "invasion" coming up for the holiday. I have already done my shopping and I make it a point to do it during the week and during the "senior times" in the mornings that some stores are doing. I also call a day ahead to get a bus ride from the nearest bus stop to the store and back to the house via Calaveras Connect and a free ride and they supply masks. That's nice of them to do that. I can hardly wait for the summer to be over with. Hey, maybe the hot temps around here (as predicted next week) will kill the virus?

Where are these cases showing up? All over Calaveras? Valley Springs? Copper? Murphys?
Oh please don't say Murphys. It will ruin Brian's f--k you Calaveras party.

Come on folks. Tuolumne is about to be declared an emergency jurisdiction. Calaveras can't be far behind.

Here’s the definition of a “Brian” so you can spot and identify them easily:
Are 35-50 years of age, but still act and talk like they’re 20
            Regularly go on bar crawls
Attempt (poorly) to hit on 20-something women, then call them stupid whores when they get rejected
Usually has at least two, self-imposed nicknames, and most often have the world big or mighty in the title.
Loves to trash talk rival NFL teams
Use about a cup of cheap gel in their hair every day in attempt to hide bald spot
They have one volume. Loud. Brian has no inside voice.
Never made it past high school, but is sure he’s the smartest guy in the room

Trump, GOP think there is a choice between pandemic or reopen economy

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"What we've seen over the last several days is a spike in cases that is way beyond the worst spikes that we've seen. That is not good news...we've got to get that under control, or we risk an even greater outbreak."

A new record for US daily coronavirus cases, all eyes on "deaths"

More than 50,000 new cases were confirmed in the U.S. yesterday, as the coronavirus continues to rage out of control. California, Texas, and other states are re-closing bars and other facilities. New York has postponed the resumption of indoor dining.

Hospitals in Houston, Arizona, and other places are filling up. Cases in some states that were previously hit hard and got the virus under control have also started to rise again. The economic recovery is stalling.

Meanwhile, the situation in Europe and other countries that handled the coronavirus well is the opposite. Life is returning to normal. So is economic activity.

On the bright side, coronavirus deaths in the US continue to decline from the April peak. This had led to the hope (occasionally belief) that it's different this time, that the virus is less deadly, that treatments are better, and that otherwise the current spike is benign......not quite....

But deaths lag case-confirmations by up to a month, and the national numbers are helped by continued declines in the northeast, so any celebration is premature. Yes, the demographics of the pandemic have shifted - now, younger people are getting sick - and treatments have improved.

But hospitalizations and deaths in some of the newly hard-hit states are starting to rise. So an increase in the national death rate may only be a matter of time.

In other words, Americans understand that it's not safe to engage in the same economic activity they used to during the pandemic. We have a demand problem stemming from the virus' very existence.

Unfortunately, this appears to be lost on Trump and his aides, according to CNN. White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and Jared Kushner reportedly want Trump to stop talking about the virus and instead emphasize the economy. They are operating under the delusion that this is a real choice, as if the pandemic is not what is crippling the economy.

The Republican party at large shares this fantasy. Take, for example, the debate over continuing enhanced unemployment benefitsfor Americans out of work. It's an extra $600 on weekly unemployment benefit checks that is set to expire at the end of the month.

Republicans want this supplement to fade out because some Americans are making more money staying at home than they were going to work.

Republicans think they have a choice between sending Americans back to work in a pandemic and continuing to pay them to stay home. They don't. If the pandemic is not under control (it is not), businesses will continue to shut down, employees will be scared to go to work, and our demand problem will persist.

Many workers simply won't be needed.
The government should be paying people to stay home in these circumstances. It's better for the economy if people can still pay their bills, so Americans aren't trapped in debt and real damage isn't done to the financial system when this is all over.

It's also easier to implement social distancing if people stay home, which will help slow the spread of the virus.
So Trump and Republicans are looking at this wrong.

They think they have a choice between the virus and the economy. They don't...

Totally agree with you! Short term universal income would eliminate a lot of the problems we’re seeing now. No one should have to risk their lives to pay their bills right now.

“As our economy is restored, it is imperative that President Trump is not undermined in his mission to return our economy to greatness,” the Arizona Republican said in a statement released after the Labor Department reported the U.S. economy had added 4.8 million jobs in June and the unemployment rate had fallen to 11.1 percent.

Biggs went on to assert that Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus response coordinator, and Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, “continue to contradict many of President Trump’s stated goals and actions for returning to normalcy as we know more about” the highly infectious outbreak.

The demand from a leading Republican lawmaker and fierce ally of the president comes after the U.S. reported a record number of new Covid-19 infections Wednesday, surpassing 50,000 cases for the first time.

Biggs’ own home state of Arizona is among those across the South and West contributing to the precipitous climbs in caseloads.

The Arizona Department of Health Services logged record numbers of daily coronavirus cases and additional deaths Wednesday, and the three most populous states — California, Florida and Texas — have also seen spikes.

Seldom do I go on the Pinetree site, but today I did.
That sort of sums up the feeling in the county. Merita and the rest of the supervisors are not popular. Complain to the health department and you get a canned reply. Friends of mine had to call in the Murphys Hotel hoopla planned for today to get it cancelled. What have the supervisors and health department done about things like this? Nothing. The Peddler's Faire in Arnold should not be held. My post office still hasn't posted a request to wear a mask in that confined space while COVID numbers are increasing daily. Worse there is no posting about who the sick people are or where they live. Some transparency.

Look back to the beginning of this article. Bottom line is county officials are NOT willing to do what’s necessary! Many locals are NOT willing to do what’s necessary! Those that continue to come to this county and do not shelter at home are NOT willing to do what’s necessary! Finally the Governor is really NOT willing to do what’s necessary! So there you go.

You are not wrong! I've been saying the same thing. Too many irresponsible, selfish, entitled, defiant people who have been, and still are, putting our community's health at risk, all because they cannot follow a few simple guidelines.

Only fools take that position. Thinning the herd takes the weak minded early on. That would be sorry for you and those like you.

tRump planned all of this, he's going to overthrow and rule us
Posted on: 2020-07-03 09:43:06   By: Anonymous

My friend told me tRump planned this, he waited for it to hit our country and then did nothing but sit on his golden toilets at home. Then he played golf at his resort letting this virus infect every single state.
tRump has a vaccine, and he's giving this vaccine only to Republicans in the House and Senate, and secretly to registered Republicans so when it's time for the Presidential Elections, so many loyal Democrats will have died that he will win. My friend also said tRump started this plan of his in New York, that's why there's so many deaths there. He saw it was successful and now the plan is in full swing on the West coast cause tRump hates Californians and our Governor Newsom.
This is true, I kid you not, use your computers people, ever notice why the most deaths are in Democrat run states? It's tRump, Bill Barr, that McConnel dude, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, no doubt Putin too.
My friend swears this is true, it's obvious tRump's planned all of this to assure he wins in 2020 and he doesn't care how many Democrats he kills so long as Joe Biden loses.
Then when he wins and if he gets both the house and senate my friend says he will take out all high ranking Democrats and since tRump is the Commander In Chief the military is his to command, he's going to become our dicktator, and nobodys going to be able to stop him. tRumps family will rule us forever.
We must be strong, wear your mask, don't get infected, those people who don't wear mask? Those people have got the vaccine already, those people are immune to the virus, they're spreading it to you and your kids, moms, grandma's. We should take action against them, now.

Well, Dr. Bandaid, now that the horse is out of the barn and people are galloping around and whooping it up in clusters without masks, what exactly IS YOUR PLAN? Ask nicely again and again? Look at the growing numbers, Doctor. How long do you plan to wait to enforce the mandate handed down by the governor? When old people like me get sick just from grocery shopping, and there's no bed at the hospital? Sure I wear a mask and creak out of my bed at 6 a.m. to shop at the market where there is no enforcement. Do you get that I am, and many like me are VERY PISSED at your refusal to do nothing, not even test enough, but just enough to get by the affirmation? If we get sick and die, it's on you. I hope you can live with it.

Expect COVID to get worse in County as World Mark and Air BnB open up. Also the second homes used by Bay Area who come up then head back down then come back up. Residents need to wear masks and wash hands as more outside contacts come into the County. Require two week quarantine like New York and that may reduce visitors.
