RENAME JULY 4th ~ Letter to the Editor by Robert G. Reagan

Murphys, CA...They should rename July 4th and call it Interdependence Day because too many people think they can do whatever they want on Independence Day with little regard for the health of their families and fellow citizens. On this July 4th a group of flag waving “patriots” marched down Main St. in Murphys, with not a face mask in sight.

Those of us who served in the military during wartime did not do so to give people the right to flaunt laws and rules designed to slow the spread of a deadly virus.
There are signs posted throughout the town extoling people to “Keep Murphys Open” by following simple rules like wearing a mask and practicing distancing. Most merchants are requiring shoppers to abide by these rules because they care about their customers and staff.

The sheriff has made it clear that he will not enforce the governor’s mandate. Fie on Rick DiBasilio. Murphys is a special place because of the number of people who care about each other and our thousands of visitors. It is a shame that this attitude is not more contagious.

Sgt. Robert G. Reagan, US Army, ret.
Murphys CA

Well that ain't cool! I can see being patriotic, but lets all heed by the guidelines like social distancing and wearing masks, etc. I heard that some churches are opening up now but with limitations like having more than one service breaking down into smaller groups. For this whole thing to work (dealing with the COVID and hoping it'll end soon) we all need to make some sacrifices. That's why I'm never going out anywhere this weekend and wait till this is over with. I made one trip away from the house yesterday. I just went down to the PO to check on my mail early Saturday morning since hardly anyone was out and about and it was just starting to get warm.
Then last night my roommates and I had a big feast at the house, invited a neighbors across the street and our next door neighbor and family-less than 10 people of course and we are all COVID 19 free and healthy! We also had fireworks (store bought) right on the street (narrow side street and very quiet) all lit in an old tub with water nearby. We are all sensible and responsible adults and had a lot of food (I myself overate lol!) and had a good time! Most of our next of kin are out of town and can't really afford to see them and vice versa. This how the poor folks celebrate and we don't claim any political parties either!

Come on people! Indoors, put a mask on. Outdoors, you are fine. Cough, sneeze or got a fever, go home and stay there!! Not looking good for any of us, unfortunately and so sad to say!!

Yes, and some of those patriots marching in Murphys were business owners.
Setting an example for others, by wearing masks and social distancing, speak much louder than just proclaiming how patriotic you are.
I hope the children of this county are smarter than some of the adults.

Please somebody clarify? To those of us who did not choose to participate in the circus of Murphy’s for the Fourth of July… Did Brian march in the show and did anybody that was in the parade wear masks? Were they local merchants and business owners are who were they? And wear their mask presents or were there or not?

You are a bunch of sad, negative, cowardly, hateful humans!

I’m sure not a one of you can say you’ve helped better our town in any way. Please tell me I’m wrong... enlighten me. I know a fellow volunteer and lover of our community would never speak these horrible words.

Sit behind your computer screen and keep being the dredged trolls you are!

Keep living your slow deaths with the hate seeping out of your pores.

I feel sorry for each of you who can say these hateful remarks without knowing who I really am. It saddens me that my fellow Americans can have so much hate in their hearts!

I hope each of you who have I’ll feelings towards me and can’t muster up the courage to have an adult conversation will stay true to themselves with their hateful remarks, well after this virus has passed. Stay away from The Hotel today, tomorrow , next year, Forever I beg of you and not just you anyone who shares these same hateful thoughts and views .

My door is open to clear the air but If you are unwilling I believe you must be the problem!

        Goodnight all,
        Brian

Not many, though. Those are just the dic*s like the hotel owner and one winery that say, hey I had the flu and I'm fine - it's all a hoax.

As a vet it is so frustrating to see so many who truly don’t understand basic principles with 1st, 2nd Amendment rights etc. This country unfortunately has had a movement of people who deny science and experts and just gravitate to those who share their views regardless of a complete lack of credibility.

Make no mistake about it, when an elected official does not enforce rules set in place by higher ranking governing officials, they are engaging in criminal behavior themselves.

"Fie" on the Sheriff? Thats pretty zesty language there, Bob. Phooey on you sir!
The Sheriff has more important work to do than to conciliate minor imbroglios.

More important work to do? What's more important than our very health? This virus is no joke. Young people are dying, too. Is that not important enough for you? It would be nice if our sheriff did SOMETHING, as opposed to NOTHING.

Thanks for taking the time, Robert. It would seem that many have lost the concept of "public health." So, guess a whole lot more of us will die in the next year or so until we reach some helpful percentage of herd immunity and have a vaccine. Because the deniers are not going to consider the data or science but only what the Twitter in Chief or their FOX News feed tells them. I overheard a Murphys wine owner say, "Well, those are people with underlying conditions or obese people." As if those lives don't matter as well. Someone also needs to tell him (and his wife, mask-less in their tasting room) that the demographics are changing. Lots of healthy, younger folks being infected now...

Looking at the comments I can only say there is no hope for us as a community or country. We need to allow each other to voice opinions in a moderate way. BUT.
I came to this country 30 years ago and was proud when I became a US citizen.
What I see now is worthy of a 3rd world country. People arguing about a health crisis. Freedom means taking care of the guy in the trench next to you. Your "freedom" is nothing if your brother dies. LETS LOVE AND RESPECT EACH OTHER.
