Famed Air Force Pilot to Speak at Bret Harte~From Buzz Eggleston
Angels Camp, CA...In recognition of Flag Day, the four Rotary clubs of Calaveras County proudly announce the appearance of Major Brian Shul, U.S. Air Force (ret.), at 6:30 p.m., Friday, June 13, in the Bret Harte High School Theater. After 20 years as an Air Force fighter pilot, Brian Shul today is an accomplished author, speaker, and photographer.....
In the Viet Nam War, he flew 212 missions before his aircraft was shot down. Severely burned in the crash he was given little chance of survival and spent one year in hospitals. After enduring 15 reconstructive surgeries, he miraculously returned to flying, and became a TopGun instructor.
He culminated his Air Force career by flying our nation’s premier spy plane, the SR-71. This was a remarkable accomplishment considering that it required an astronaut physical to qualify for the plane that routinely flew above 95 percent of the earth’s atmosphere. Only 93 Air Force pilots in history flew the SR-71, still the fastest plane ever built. Brian flew the Blackbird for four years and was the pilot who provided key photos of Libyan strongman Moammar Kadafi’s terrorist camps during the Libyan Crisis in 1986.
Brian retired from the Air Force in 1990, and pursued writing and photography. He was the first Blackbird pilot ever to write a book about flying that plane, illustrated with his own photography. Brian’s most recent book represents the definitive photo essay on the SR-71 and was hailed as Aviation Book of the Year by Smithsonian Magazine.
Brian’s remarkable comeback story is popular with audiences nationwide. His humorous delivery and unique photos have made him one of America’s most popular speakers. Today he owns Gallery One Photography and is well known for his nationally acclaimed nature photography.
On June 13, Brian will give a feature presentation of his famed Spy Pilot Chronicles show at the Bret Harte Theater in Angels Camp. He will share some of his unique SR-71 slides, as well as extremely rare video footage of the most top secret aircraft ever built. Using his aviation photography as a backdrop, Brian presents a very riveting story of pursuing one’s dreams and making each day count, revealing a broader message of hope and inspiration that appeals to family members of all ages. This will be a one-time only showing, an entertaining evening you won’t want to miss.
