Nine New Cases of COVID-19 Reported in Calaveras County as Surge Continues

San Andreas, CA...On Tuesday, July 28, 2020 Calaveras Public Health reported nine new cases of COVID-19 in Calaveras County. The additional cases include one female and two males between 0 to 17 years of age, four females and one male between 18 to 49 years of age, and one male over the age of 65. Four cases were reported in District 1, Districts 2 and 3 had one reported case each, and three cases were reported in District 5. No new cases were reported from District 4.

“We must continue to do our part to ensure that we are on a path to recovery. As we wait for new treatments and a vaccine, there are actions people can do now that we know work,” said Dr. Dean Kelaita, Calaveras County Health Officer. “Recovery is something we all want to see happen as quickly as possible. We can achieve this when local businesses and our community work together to keep each other safe and healthy. This means wearing a face covering, getting tested, washing your hands often, staying home if you are sick, and practicing physical distancing.” said Dr. Kelaita.

To date, Calaveras Public Health has reported 108 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Of those cases, 80 cases have since recovered while 27 cases remain active. There has been one reported death related to COVID-19 in Calaveras County.

The best ways to avoid exposure to the virus are to:
 Stay home as much as you can
 Stay at least 6 feet away from people outside of your household
 Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
 Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
 Wear a face covering over your nose and mouth when around others

Calaveras Public Health staff continues to investigate new cases to determine any possible persons who may have had close personal contact with the positive individuals. Close contacts may be contacted by the health department, assessed and monitored for signs and symptoms of COVID-19 illness.

Symptoms can appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19:

 Fever or chills
 Cough
 Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
 Fatigue
 Muscle or body aches
 Headache
 New loss of taste or smell
 Sore throat
 Congestion or runny nose
 Nausea or vomiting
 Diarrhea

Look for emergency warning signs for COVID-19. If someone is showing signs, seek emergency care immediately:

 Trouble breathing
 New confusion or weakness
 Bluish lips or face
 Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
 Inability to wake or stay awake

No-cost testing for COVID-19 is available to anyone who would like to get tested. The OptumServe COVID-19 testing site located at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds is open Tuesday-Saturday from 7:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. Testing is now available to those age 3 and older. People are highly encouraged to register online. People without Internet access should call (888) 634-1123.

Beginning on Tuesday, July 28th, Calaveras Public Health will provide the number of COVID-19 tests reported in the last 14 days rather than the total number of tests conducted to-date. This move aligns with the county data monitoring system put into action by the California Department of Public Health. Monitoring COVID-19 closely in Calaveras County will help keep the public informed and ready if restrictions are needed to slow the spread of COVID-19. To receive information and resources related to COVID-19 visit the Calaveras County COVID-19 website.

Plead with the Sheriff to step up. That would be most effective. His failure to do so is either misfeasance or malfeasance. But in either case it should be corrected promptly.

If you listen to the news and our elected county officials you get mixed results. Listen to your doctor or any doctor. If you can't do that for whatever reason, stay home. If this keeps going the county will shut down if we listen to all the out of county and part time residents who flock here because we are officially ooen and with no enforcement. I say when this is over get rid of everyone who didn't want to enforce the mandates. People need to speak up when in stores and businesses that post face masked required and don't adhere to it.

Some of the people facilitating the spread are our very own county employees. We all know our sheriff is an anti-mask advocate and his deputies are not wearing masks in the county courtrooms. Well the county DAs office has just had a major Covid outbreak, several employees in that office testing positive. So you have sick employees in county courtrooms with deputies also not wearing masks. Of course the air they all breath out is recirculated through the HVAC system and reintroduced for anyone and everyone to breath while in court. Why in the heck are judges allowing this to happen in their courtrooms? I won't ask why the supervisors are sitting on their butts on this. When are they not? I sure hope I'm not called in for jury duty because I will not go. Do you judges honestly expect the good citizens of this county to risk their lives because the sheriff, his deputies and the DA choose to behave selfishly and endanger our community health?

Wait a minute. What is this “cases recovered “. That is a dangerously misleading statistic if they are still infected and capable of transmission. Recovered implies they no longer have the disease. Calaveras Public Health May be giving us misleading information. How about better more complete reporting from them!!

You should have seen Murphys last Saturday afternoon. Must have been 800 people on the street. A huge majority of people, probably more than 90%, were not wearing masks. Admittedly all were outside, but the crowd was dense and no, no social distancing at all it appeared.

The scene at The Lube Room is dangerous, people all over the place, no masks, hanging out in the parking lot... Everyone there are tourists just out on lark, Sunday drive, whatever. You have residents who are trying to get to the post office there, and can't even park for 2 minutes to get their mail.

Flatlanders just stay home!!! You don't need to come up for the day to a place where there are permanent residents just to look around and go to a bar and eat. STAY HOME!!!!!!!

You can choose to call them what you want flatlanders, X flouters, Outsiders whatever you call them they’re coming from counties that are infested and their overtaking our county which was not. And yet our county supervisors and officials continue to do nothing but let it continue to go on. I don’t think that the government should be in control of us but I think county officials should stop the infestation of the outsiders to protect our community

We need protesters with "Tourists Go Home" signs at 4 &49 in Angels, on Main Street or 4 in Murphys and on 4 in Arnold. We've been more than patient in requesting our supervisors and sheriff take the situation in hand. They refuse. It's time we take our health and our county back.

Let’s get this straight

So let’s really look at this picture

Since March we have had a “Total” ...I repeat “Total” Of 108 positive cases. Of that 108, 80 have recovered....in the past 14 Days 1155 tests have been performed and only 27 are active? Am I missing something? We are on the edge of the Watchlist really”!

Tuolumne county has Had a total of like 137 positive cases since March with “17” currently active cases...

The health departments and the states are misleading the people..

What you fail to realize is how many infected people come and go in this county every day.
The data only reflect the residents who test positive or negative.
Do you not see the daily traffic of nonlocals?
In March, April, and May the roads were practically deserted. Our county only had cases of people that had taken trips outside the country.
    Coincidence?
    No. Facts.

based on the bmi put out by the health department, the majority of Americans are considered obese.
That, according to you, means the majority of Americans are at risk of dieing from covid.

Anyone can get infected with the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19. But, as we continue to learn more about this new disease, it's becoming increasingly clear that some people are more vulnerable to severe illness than others — including those who are very overweight.

"People may not realize this, but obesity in and of itself is a risk factor for being hospitalized or placed in the ICU as a result of COVID-19," says Dr. Kyle Stephens, weight loss surgeon at Houston Methodist. "And this is particularly concerning since we also know that about 42% of adults in the U.S. are considered obese."
But, even if you feel healthy, just being heavily overweight can increase your risk of severe illness as well.

"In fact, obesity is the number one risk factor for developing a severe case of COVID-19 in people under the age of 55," warns Dr. Stephens. "People don't always see obesity as abnormal, since it's quite prevalent, but it's important to know if your weight is putting you at risk for COVID-19, as well as other health conditions."

A person is considered obese if he or she has more body fat than what's considered healthy for his or her height. A quick measurement called body mass index (BMI) is used as a screening tool for obesity.

"Having a BMI of 30 or higher increases a person's risk of developing a severe case of COVID-19 by 27%," Dr. Stephens says. "And a BMI of 40 or higher doubles a person's risk."

And Switzerland is about the size of Tuolumne County.
        Simple comparisons.
Why not bring up New Zealand. An island nation that can monitor the coming/going of everyone.
Can't compare the US and New Zealand.
Ok. Compare Italy and the US. Scary to think what will happen here in the US when you compare a small country like Italy(with open borders and tons of tourists) with the US. Unless the US has a complete shutdown with mandatory federal restrictions, tens of thousands of Americans will die each month.
        Pretty simple idea.
Doesn't matter if you believe in herd immunity. Americans will die.
        Where's the outrage?
Some are more worried they can't eat out.

Who gives a crap how she spells her name it’s not relevant to us as a community. What we care about is whether or not she steps up and gets sober and does her job. Or if she just continues to turn her head when she finds it applicable to do so.
