Taxpayers Get Organized~By Al Segalla
For the first time history of Calaveras County, taxpayers have their own lobby. This is according to Al Segalla, President of the new CALAVERAS COUNTY TAXPAYERS ASSOCIATION. (CCTA) The Articles of Incorporation were approved on May 15, 2008 by the California Secretary of State. CCTA is a 501(C4) non-profit, non partisan, public advocacy organization dedicated to protecting and promoting the interests of approximately 50,000 taxpayers of which about 35,000 are property owners. The CCTA mission statement states: “We recognize the human rights to liberty and property in a free society”.....
According to Segalla, the organization is needed to balance the massive lobbying by thousands of special interest groups dedicated to increasing the size and expenditures of government at all levels. He thinks the group will achieve a membership of at least 3,500 by the end of this year, helped by the group’s outreach efforts and the low annual membership dues of $12.
The Association will sponsor educational forums and luncheon speakers, give recognition to public employees for outstanding service, attend Board of Supervisors meetings and issue “Action Alerts” to the membership when needed. CCTA hosts a website (CalaverasTaxpayers.org) which features a discussion forum and public opinion quizzes. In addition, there are plans for CCTA business members to offer price discounts to Association members and establish an Executive Council of leading citizens.
Serving on CCTA Board of Directors are: President, Al Segalla; Vice President, Bill Mason; Treasurer, Bruce Tallakson; Secretary, Kyran Enzi; Director, Cory Burnell; and Director, Bob Mulvany.
The Taxpayers Association is seeking volunteers with knowledge of local government to help on policy committees and workshops.
Interested persons can obtain more information by visiting the CCTA website CalaverasTaxpayers.org or by calling (815) 846-0765.
