Tips for Keeping Your Garden in Shape Featured May 24th
San Andreas, CA....With temperatures rising and days lengthening gardeners are watching their plants come to life with a surge of new growth. Sometimes this new growth can get out of control, vines climbing everywhere, ground covers taking over, and small shrubs tangled with growth. For anyone needing help tidying up their garden the Calaveras County Master Gardeners Open Garden Day on May 24th is designed to meet that specific need.....
At 10:30 a.m., a presentation on “Shaping Up the Garden: Train, Trellis, Tie and Thin” will be offered. Topics covered in the talk include: pruning techniques, tips on using trellises in the garden, the proper methods for tying up long branches, and how to train plants to grow in specific shapes or directions. With all the new ideas you will learn at this session your garden is certain to look trim and tidy in no time.
Also be sure to take home this month's handy Pest Control Quick Tip reference cards with information on "Tree Borers and Scales". Quick Tips are University of California reference cards offering advice on proper pest control methods and are free to the public.
In addition, throughout the day Master Gardeners will be celebrating 25 years of service to the community by taking a look back at their activities, educational projects and accomplishments from 1983 to 2008. Former Master Gardeners are invited to stop by the Demonstration Garden and share their memories and contributions to the program with current Master Gardeners and visitors.
The Calaveras County Master Gardeners Demonstration Garden is located one-half mile off Highway 49 at the County Government Center (891 Mountain Ranch Road) in San Andreas. Gardening information is offered free of charge. When the garden is not open, home gardening assistance is offered by Master Gardeners through the Help Line: 754-2880. The public may call the number, leave a message regarding the problem, and a Master Gardener will return the call.
The Demonstration Garden is a project of the Calaveras County Master Gardeners whose primary goal is educating the public about home gardening. The garden has been under construction for several years with all funding coming from Master Gardeners, UC Cooperative Extension, grants, and private donations.
