Thirteen New Cases of COVID-19 Reported in Calaveras County

San Andreas, CA...On Friday, August 14, 2020 Calaveras Public Health reported 13 new cases of COVID-19 in Calaveras County. The additional cases include four females and two males between 18 to 49 years of age, three females and one male between 50-64 years of age, and two females and one male over the age of 65. Six cases were reported in District 1, Districts 2, 3, and 4 each had one case, and District 5 had four cases.

“We urge people to commit doing what we know works to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Practice physical distancing, wear a face covering, get tested, wash your hands often, and stay home if you are sick,” said Dr. Dean Kelaita, Calaveras County Health Officer. “Avoid gatherings with people you don’t live with. Let’s do our part slow the spread.”

To date, Calaveras Public Health has reported 174 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Of those cases, 150 cases have since recovered while 23 cases remain active. There has been one reported death related to COVID-19 in Calaveras County.

The best ways to avoid exposure to the virus are to:
 Stay home if you are sick
 Stay at least 6 feet away from people outside of your household
 Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
 Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
 Wear a face covering over your nose and mouth when around others

Calaveras Public Health staff continues to investigate new cases to determine any possible persons who may have had close personal contact with the positive individuals. Close contacts may be contacted by the health department, assessed and monitored for signs and symptoms of COVID-19 illness.

Symptoms can appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19:
 Fever or chills
 Cough
 Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
 Fatigue
 Muscle or body aches
 Headache
 New loss of taste or smell
 Sore throat
 Congestion or runny nose
 Nausea or vomiting
 Diarrhea

Look for emergency warning signs for COVID-19. If someone is showing signs, seek emergency care immediately:
 Trouble breathing
 New confusion or weakness
 Bluish lips or face
 Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
 Inability to wake or stay awake

No-cost testing for COVID-19 is available to anyone who would like to get tested. The OptumServe COVID-19 testing site located at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds is open Tuesday-Saturday from 7:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. Testing is now available to those age 3 and older. People are highly encouraged to register online. People without Internet access should call (888) 634-1123. To receive information and resources related to COVID-19 visit the Calaveras County COVID-19 website.

Please folks-wear a mask and practice social distancing! Additionally, I heard that a few BIG "tourist oriented" businesses will be forced to shut down!

There are only 23 active cases in the ENTIRE County. Give it a rest! There is NO justification form of being fully open at this point.

How many would you like to see before we shut down then? The reason for the restrictions is so we don't get more and overload our (very small) hospital capacity.

With 3 people being hospitalized, it could become a big deal.
The number of nurses and doctors that it takes to keep 1 patient alive could be a burden on our small hospital.
If you think that any of the nursing homes or elder care facilities in our county are immune from the virus, youre nuts.
Obviously, the anti maskers and the disbelievers of social distancing have never cared for an elderly relative and watched how quickly their health can deteriorate.
Throw in cancer patients and those with an auto immune system that is easily compromised, and we could see something serious similar to Amador County.
Selfish people tend to not think too far into the future.

Thank you Donald Trump for sitting on your a__ while over a thousand Americans die from this disease every day. From the beginning and every day for the last seven months you've had the opportunity to lead, close the country down to stop this enemy. But, you haven't, you've failed, bigley. You declared war and proclaimed yourself a wartime president, then hunkered down behind your own personal protective defenses, while leaving the rest of America exposed and dying. Something happens in real battle bonespur knows nothing about, you either kill your enemy, or your enemy kills you. For real, that is exactly what has been happening, horrible, endless, death. It's not OK. Trump has chosen not to lead, to defeat our enemy, but to give it every opportunity to kill Americans day after day after endless days. By this Christmas estimates are that Trump will have allowed our enemy to kill 300,000 Americans. That's over 5 times the number of Americans killed in Vietnam. Trump isn't a leader, he is a complete failure.

Trump could have ordered masks in the beginning.
At the very least he could have led by example. He still won't give strong support to wearing a mask.

It has plenty to do with trump. His job was to provide for the common defense and general welfare of the nation. He failed in that thought ignorance, fantasy, and self interest. The nation cannot survive another four years of trump , especially if other threats arise.

Whoooee! You are way out of your league. This is. no hillbilly as you say. . Yes , people who refuse to wear face covers are a major part of the problem. But if one looks at the national pandemic, it is obvious that trump downplayed it, refused to follow the advice of experts, and failed to gear up the nation with proper equipment and supplies.

You are a stupid A-Hole. Are you not informed? If you dislike President Trump so much then why do you listen to what he has to say? The medical experts were on his daily briefings and told Americans to wear masks, keep a safe distance and wash your hands. If people are too ignorant to follow CDC guidelines and then blame it on the President then they deserve to contract the virus.

What.? Look, trump is a freaking disaster. He is a huge part of the problem. If I listen to him it is only out of fear of what disaster or problems he is causing.
My behavior is influenced by the experts, so I and mine wear face coverings, avoid crowds, and try to be respectful of others by distancing. The no maskers are typically trump cultists, and will not help protect there community, and so should be denied access to public facilities and given tickets by law enforcement.

So let me get this right. The above belief is we all should wait for direction from someone three thousand miles away! As a state, county or individuals we are unable to think for ourselves? Figure out and implement a plan that’s correct for us! It’s obvious that’s the case. Just listen to the Governor and our county health officer as well as the actions of the citizens!

                      So much talk about accountability.
Yes, people need to be responsible for their actions. Wearing a mask is paramount to getting a handle on the virus. Distancing and hygiene are big factors as well. The fact that those that are asymptomatic are among us should be a given. If everyone was wearing a mask it would cut the rate of infections.
                      Pretty simple.
Those that blame Newsom for opening CA too soon are right.
Those same people seem to also think that Trump is not at fault for any of this. Early actions on his part would have saved many lives.
Both men need to be held accountable.
