Water District Seeks Public Involvement in Regional Water Supply and Environmental Restoration Effort
The Calaveras County Water District is seeking Federal support to undertake a regional water supply and environmental restoration effort in the Camanche-Valley Springs-New Hogan area of western Calaveras County. Critical to the success of this program is local support from communities and landowners to develop a raw water supply to meet its agricultural and irrigation water needs in an area experiencing groundwater overdraft. CCWD is actively encouraging all landowners and communities within the affected area to become involved in the reconnaissance and feasibility study.....
process. CCWD Director Ed Rich has been working extensively with landowners and agricultural groups throughout the County to identify and map potential agricultural areas that may benefit from surface water supplies.
“We have an outstanding opportunity to develop a comprehensive water supply program that in the long term provides a safe, reliable raw water supply to the Camanche/Valley Springs area,” said General Manager David Andres. “As responsible stewards of our collective public resources we are encouraging all interested landowners to become actively involved in this process.”
CCWD worked extensively with its congressional delegation and was successful in having the project authorized for Federal participation in the Water Resources Development Act of 2007.
“We owe tremendous gratitude to the offices of California Senators Boxer (D)
and Feinstein (D) and Congressman Dan Lungren (R-Gold River) who
understood the great benefits this project will provide and worked extensively to have Congress address our local needs,” said Andres.
CCWD is now working with these members to secure funding for the project’s feasibility study. To become involved with CCWD’s efforts, or to request additional information on the proposed project, interested citizens should contact Edwin Pattison, Water Resources Manager, at (209) 754-3543, Extension 29 or email edwinp@ccwd.org.
