Elder Abuse Investigations in Copperopolis & Arnold for Calaveras Sheriff's Office
San Andreas, CA...In the evening of September 18, 2020, an elderly male (72 years of age) contacted the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office to report an incident of elder abuse. According to the victim, the suspect began arguing with him for a substantial amount of time. While arguing with the victim, the suspect placed the victim in a headlock/chokehold and applied pressure causing the victim to nearly lose consciousness. The suspect released his hold on the victim and punched him approximately four times in the ribs and stomach area. After striking the victim, the suspect continued to abuse the victim verbally. During the investigation, it was discovered that the victim had been verbally and mentally tormenting the victim for approximately two years and caused an estimated $600 worth of vandalism. Suspect Eugene Wayne Stephens (49 years of age, Copperopolis) left the residence prior to deputies arrival. Deputies checked the area and the residences of persons associated with suspect Stephens; however, they were unable to locate him.
On September 20, 2020, at about 11:00 AM, deputies were summoned to the 700 block of Meadow Drive, Arnold, for a report of elder abuse. Upon arrival, deputies discovered Suspect Nicholas Andrew Hart (21 years of age Arnold) had fled the residence after throwing an unopened energy drink can at the 74-year-old female victim. The can struck the victim on the arm, causing a visible injury. When deputies conducted a records inquiry via dispatch, they discovered a valid restraining order protecting the victim from Suspect Hart.
As deputies were conducting witness interviews and taking evidentiary photographs, Suspect Hart arrived at the property. He was given the opportunity to make a statement; however, he declined. He was placed in handcuffs and transported to the Calaveras County Jail for booking. He was charged with felony elder abuse and violation of a court order. He is being held with a bail of $50,000.
The Calaveras County Sheriff’s office would like to remind everyone that elder abuse is a serious crime that often goes unreported. Please contact the Sheriff’s Office at 209-754-6500 or the anonymous tip line at 209-754-6030 if you know or believe someone is the victim of any type of abuse.
