Warrant Scam Making the Rounds in Tuolumne County
Sonora, CA...Our office has received numerous inquiries regarding scammers calling local residents from the Sheriff’s Office phone number. These scammers are claiming to be deputies with our office and are using active and retired deputies names when identifying themselves. The scammers are telling residents they have warrants for their arrest and are requesting personal identifying information and/or money as a result of said warrant.
It is important to know we will not request money to clear a warrant and will never request money via the telephone. Moreover, warrants cannot be cleared via the telephone.
If you receive a call from our office and are concerned it may be a scam, hang up and call back at 209-533-5815. A dispatcher will be able to confirm if a deputy is actually on duty and attempting to contact you for a valid reason.
