The Calaveras County Sheriff s Department received a grant at the beginning of July 2007 from the California State Department of Alcohol Beverage Control to deal with alcohol related problems. In the past year numerous operations have been conducted which have resulted in over 70 arrests, or citations for alcohol related offenses.
The objective of the grant is to minimize underage drinking within the communities of Calaveras County. Several different operations have been used to reach that objective, including minor decoys attempting to purchase alcohol directly from merchants, decoy operations outside of the store where the minor asks adults to buy alcohol for them.
Deputies and ABC Agents have found that the merchants within the county have done a very good job in asking for identification to verify the age of those attempting to purchase alcohol. The biggest problem that seems to occur during each operation is adults outside the stores willing to buy for those under the age of 21. Law Enforcement has used decoys as young as 15 years old and those cited have used very poor judgment in purchasing the alcohol for the decoys. Deputies and ABC Agents have found in some cases where adults have tried to lure the minor decoys to consume the alcohol with them, this alarms law enforcement officials. We conduct these operation because we're aware
this is happening in the community, we also realize that this happens at times and as law enforcement we can't always be their to protect our young people. This is where parents really need to communicate to their children the dangers of this type of activity. The ultimate goal is to see that the young people of Calaveras County don't endanger themselves with the abuse of careless consumption of alcohol. Anytime we lose the life of a young person through the careless actions of an adult who provides alcohol to a minor is careless, tragic, and criminal.
