Berry Bushes Credited with Assist in Foot Chase that Lead to Arrest for Weapons Violation
West Point, CA...On May 18, 2021, at about 1:50 PM deputies were patrolling Main Street, West Point, when they observed a male holding what appeared to be a handgun near the intersection of Bouvard St and Main St. Deputies attempted to contact the subject however, he fled on foot. Deputies pursued the suspect on foot. While during the foot pursuit, the Deputy recognized the suspect as Carlos Nunez (age 39 from West Point). Nunez was able to evade capture.
At about 6:00 PM a Calaveras County Deputy Sheriff and Calaveras County Deputy probation officer were patrolling the West Point area near Pine Street looking for Nunez. While patrolling they recognized Nunez as a passenger in a vehicle. When they attempted to contact him, Nunez took off running. While pursuing Nunez a second time, he ran around a residence into some berry bushes. If you have ever tried to walk much less run through berry bushes, you can determine what happened next. With the assistance of said bushes, deputies and probation officers were able to take Nunez into custody without further incident. A search incident to arrest revealed a loaded 9 mm handgun. Upon inspection of the weapon, no serial numbers could be located. A records check revealed that Nunez is prohibited from possessing any firearms or ammunition.
Suspect Carlos Barbado Nunez Jr was transported and booked in the Calaveras County Jail. He was charged with Penal Code 29800(a) Prohibited Person Possessing Firearm, Penal Code 30305 (a) (1) Possession of Ammunition by Prohibited Person, Penal Code 148 (A)(1) Resisting Arrest, a warrant issued from the Amador County Superior Court for possession of stolen property and drug-related charges and a misdemeanor traffic warrant issued by the Superior Court of Manteca California. Nunez is being held with a total bail of $245,000.00.On May 18, 2021, at about 1:50 PM deputies were patrolling Main Street, West Point, when they observed a male holding what appeared to be a handgun near the intersection of Bouvard St and Main St. Deputies attempted to contact the subject however, he fled on foot.
