Caltrans to Install Center Left - Turn Lane in Murphys

Murphys, CA... On State Route 4 between Pennsylvania Gulch Road and Main Street. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is preparing to build a two-way, center, left-turn lane to improve existing traffic conditions on State Route 4 between Pennsylvania Gulch Road and Main Street/Lawrence Street in the scenic town of Murphys in the Sierra Nevada foothills.

Work is scheduled to begin June 21, 2021 and end in fall 2021. Some of the work will be conducted at night when one-way traffic control will be employed. Motorists should
expect 10-minute delays. Traffic impact is expected to be minimal during day time hours.

Currently, motorists can be delayed on Route 4 during peak morning and afternoon hours and some drivers have been observed using the shoulder to pass vehicles waiting to safely make a left-hand turn onto Pennsylvania Gulch Road toward Michelson Elementary School and Main Street/Lawrence Street to downtown Murphys.

Motorists intending to make a left turn will be channeled into a center lane, which will improve traffic flow and eliminate motorists from using the shoulder to pass vehicles in queue.

The $3.5 million project – awarded to Dirt Dynasty Inc. of Valley Springs, CA – will include widening and restriping the roadway, and installing new drainage systems, gutters, curbs and a high-visibility crosswalk with flashing beacons.

This work is scheduled to begin as listed, but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment, and/or materials and construction related issues.

For more information and updates on additional projects, please visit www.dot.ca.gov/d10/projects or on Twitter via @CaltransDist10.

One can hope that this "improvement" will help.
Penn Gulch has always been tricky.
The speeds on Hwy4 is the issue. You can get someone going 30-35mph and still have problems. 40-45mph is the norm.

It will end up being a passing lane for flatlanders, young punks in jacked up trucks and the valley trash that have overrun our communities just like the "turn" lane ie suicide lane in Angels.

Road surfaces are falling apart while they

The actual road surfaces are cracking apart while this time and money bleeding little busy work is happening all over on roadways. The highway from San Andreas to Angles Camp is in need of surface, widening and more turn outs. The narrow bridge surfaces are full of holes that destroy rims, tires and can cause accidents especially in smaller vehicles.

Roundabouts at all busy intersections in our foothill and mountain towns.

These middle suicide lanes are even a bigger accident hazard with vehicles having less window area and blind spots to see what is going on around you.

Too many think it is a rest stop and just sit here, then zoom out cutting off others.

Our roads are good, all in all. Sound like you personally have “attention deprivation.” Get over it!

If the HIWAY patrol did their job a lot of the narrow misses wouldn’t be happening. Case in point, I asked a HIWAY patrolman if it is illegal to black out your passenger and drivers side windows? Yes was the answer, but a continued excuse came out of his mouth. “. We have better things to do with our time than stop people with blacked out windows”! This gave me the opportunity to answer back, I see you have plenty of time to go to Starbucks, and meet there with 3 or 4 other patrolman », what the hell! These gay bay people are constantly passing on the right in Murphys, Friday afternoons should have atleast one patrolman pulling these a-holes over, a big, fat fine, and maybe they would get the notice!

The ugly uckers are doing us a favor. And if a justifiably nervous cop shoots them, I'm OK with that

A left turn lane needs to go in on hiway 4 and Pondrosa Way going east, right at the fitness center. Very dangerous but you know they'll wait for someone to be killed. Already tons of accidents there since the Fitness center opened years ago

There wasn’t one accident there when Fitness 4 was a bowling alley! Bowler’s are better driver’s than muscle men!

Ha! No, that just indicates that there was no traffic going to the bowling alley.

I love to come to Murphys grab some coffee and *bleep* my dog as I walk precious through your lovely wine stained streets! The simple mountain folk are so quirky with their little pokey sticks picking up all the trash I leave. I just love coming up here to get away from people like me;)

I think a turn lane is a good idea even though a cost of almost $4 million sounds high. Especially when it is illegal to pass on the right if there's a solid line. The left turn onto Main St. has a broken line on the right but if there are 2 or 3 cars turning left it can get crazy.
