Calaveras County, CA....Jon Coupal, president of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association (HJTA), will discuss how taxpayers can defend themselves from new threats at a Calaveras County Taxpayers Association fundraiser on Wednesday, July 30 at a 6 PM. The event will be held at Moaning Cavern Park in Vallecito. There will be cavern tours and zip line rides available between 5 and 6 PM. .....
Coupal, an attorney who successfully argued the term limits Proposition 140 before the California Supreme Court, has been HJTA president since 1999. Prior to that he served as the organization’s Director of Legal Affairs. He is the principal author of Proposition 218, the Right to Vote on Taxes Act, which was approved by voters in 1996.
HJTA is a statewide organization founded by Proposition 13 coauthor, Howard Jarvis. Its mission is the protection of Proposition 13 and the advancements of taxpayers’ rights. The Association takes an active role in state tax policy, and was instrumental in the defeat of Proposition 88, which would have allowed the state to impose a state-wide property tax.
“The successes we have achieved have been made possible by working with local taxpayers groups,” says Coupal. “I’m glad to be joining one of the best.”
Also speaking and introducing Jon Coupal will be County Auditor/Controller Linda Churches, who has greatly improved the county financial processing. Linda is a former Calaveras County Chamber Director.
The event will include a delicious luau dinner provided by the award winning Ken Churches Catering, Magic tricks by Odie of the Old Corner, harmonica tunes by Doug Parrish of Seaspray Marine Covers accompanied by guitar. Seating is limited to 200. Tickets are $25 for nonmembers and members $20. Membership dues are $12 annually.
