CA Homicide Up 31%: Legislative Democrats’ Solution: Reduce Penalties for Criminals Convicted of the Most Heinous Murder

Sacramento, CA...Crime is spiking and what do Legislative Democrats want to do? Revisit a bill that reduces penalties for criminals convicted of the most heinous crimes.   Days after Los Angeles experienced a bloody weekend and media is reporting the staggering uptick in crime, legislative Democrats are revisiting Senate Bill 300 (SB 300), legislation that would reduce the sentence for individuals convicted of the most serious and heinous murders. Not only would it allow a judge to reduce the penalty for the actual killer, preventing life in prison and the death penalty, but it also prohibits the prosecution and sentencing of individuals who aid the killer in their crimes even when they act with reckless indifference to human life.

How does this make our streets safer? A look at recent headlines gives you a picture of crime in California:

A very one sided argument from an endangered species - the CA Senate Republican. Let's have some real perspective, not just reprinting whatever an elected POL says.

... in a state the size of half the eastern seaboard. Context matters, John. But I guess your fear mongering doesn’t work with it.
What’s the matter? Short on ad money? Need page clicks?
This site is a joke, and so is your terrible writing.

I know all of us who are here in the foothills moved here to enjoy life and read cheap, catty, whitewing political content on TPT. You don't have to read it or support it. If you find this site's editorial content offensive you can tell the advertisers you know it's offensive and boycott their businesses.

Homicides in California jumped 31% last year, making it the deadliest year since 2007, and Black people accounted for nearly one-third of all victims as the nation’s most populous state struggled with the COVID-19 pandemic and concerns over racial injustice, according to reports released Thursday.

The 2,202 homicides last year were 523 more than in 2019, while the rate increased by a similar margin — from 4.2 to 5.5 homicides per 100,000 people.

That’s the most slayings since 2,258 people were killed in 2007, and the rate is the highest since 2008. Black people make up 6.5% of California’s population but accounted for 31% of all victims last year. Latino people accounted for 45% of victims, while 16% were white.

Last year saw such a stark increase in homicides in part because the number and rate of homicides the year before were so low.

California’s 2019 homicide rate was the lowest since 1966, and rates of violent and property crime in 2019 generally were among the lowest since the 1960s, four experts from UC Berkeley’s California Policy Lab said in a related review focusing on cities with more than 100,000 people.

California cities generally fared better than those in other states that saw bigger per capita increases in homicides and aggravated assaults, experts say

How does lightening sentences reduce crime? Why not eliminate the prisoners on death row by eliminating the prisoners on death row. You're sentenced to die, you're gone in the morning. Reducing the penalties for crimes only encourages more crime because THERE IS NO PENALTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rise in crime is something California needs to address. But this state is not in the top states for homocide per capital. The most deadly states are mainly so called red states. Same for most dangerous cities, mostly red state cities. The only CA City in the top most dangerous cities is one...San Bernardino.
So, if one wants to make crime stats a partisan political issue it should be noted that GOP leaning cities and states are the most numerous in high crime rankings.
