The Death Ride 2008 is Here!

Recognized as one of the premier cycling events in the West, the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce, the 28th Anniversary of the Death Ride will take place on July 12th. Located in the stunning California Alps, the Death Ride course covers the traditional five mountain passes. This super challenging course includes climbing both sides of Monitor Pass, both sides of Ebbetts Pass, and the final climb up the east side of Carson Pass. Cyclists will start and finish at Turtle Rock Park, located two miles north of Markleeville, CA......

This year’s ride returns riders to our infamous five pass course including:
* Monitor Pass (8,314')
* Ebbett's Pass (8,730')
* Carson Pass (8,573')

Beginning and ending at Turtle Rock Park just north of Markleeville, California, the five pass ride includes 129 miles and 15,000+ feet of lung busting climbing. You also have the option of riding one, two, three or four passes. For your safety, the first four passes will be closed at specific times to vehicular traffic.

Five pass finishers will receive a five-pass pin and be eligible to purchase an exclusive five-pass finisher jersey.

Start Time:
Please obey the traffic laws. Starting before the official start-time requires proper lighting. Generally, the start-time is 5:30 am. Line up at the Turtle Rock Park start area to be let on the course when it opens. Always ride single-file. From 5:00 am - 9:00 am, the road will be closed to traffic from the Markleeville Courthouse to the junction of Highways 89 & 4. Riders not planning on completing all passes please start a little later to avoid congestion at the start and along the course.

Required Safety Rules:

* Always obey traffic laws, even on closed roads
* Ride single-file
* Control speed on descents
* Be prepared for all weather (cold, heat, wind, rain, hail, and snow)
* Carry proper gear (tubes, pump, sunscreen, food)
* Use proper lighting if starting before daylight
* Approved helmets are always required
* Earphones are prohibited (riders can be cited by local law enforcement agencies)
* Carry an extra layer of clothing at all times
* Aerobars or child carriers prohibited

While we have tried to outline the necessary information for you to have a safe ride, please remember that this event can be dangerous! Be careful! Watch out for mud, rocks, cows, cattle guards, deer, other riders and other hazards. Your safety is your responsibility. You ride at your own risk!

Death Ride Expo:
Be sure to visit the many booths at the Death Ride® Expo. Exhibitors will provide products and services ranging from tech-support to souvenir items. The expo takes place on the Friday and Saturday of the Death Ride®.

Clothing Drop-Off:
Drop-off of personal belongings will be available at the top of Monitor Pass and at the Topaz rest stop. Riders will receive a colored numbered label with their bib number to place on a provided plastic bag. Bags can be left with clothing drop off volunteers. We will not ship lost and found items. You may send a self-addressed, pre-paid envelope to the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce (PO Box 265, Markleeville, CA 96120) to retrieve your left items. Items may be retrieved from the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce office until 09/12/08. Unretrieved items will be donated to local charities after 09/12/08. This service in no way makes the Death Ride® or any of it's affiliates responsible for your belongings.

We will do our best to keep the items organized, however if items are not properly identified and bagged they may become lost. Additionally, any items not picked-up the day of the event by 8:00 pm will be available on Sunday until 12:00 pm after the event at Turtle Rock Park.
