Each of the Fabulous Frogs is sponsored by a local business or individual. The sponsor has worked with a local artist to create a Painted Frog which will entertain and delight people that visit Calaveras County as well as those that live here.
Each year the Painted Frogs are taken to Frogtown in late October where they are sold to the highest bidder in a fabulous Gala Frog Auction. All proceeds from the Auction from each frog are donated to a charity selected by the sponsors.
The program began in 2003 with the first 25 frogs in crouching position. These fabulous works of Frog Art decorated the county all throughout Spring and Summer. In October, the 25 frogs were sold to the highest bidder at the Gala Frog Auction generating more than $165,000 to support local charities. In 2005 the Chamber of Commerce did it again with the Leaping position of the Frog and the charity auction generated almost $150,000 again.
This year, in the Class of 2008 there are 16 Fabulous Frogs which will be on display throughout the county.
Check out the Frog Map to see all of the locations.
The Gala Frog Auction is set for Saturday October 25th in the Mark Twain Hall at Frogtown. That night the 16 Frogs will be sold to the highest bidder and you won't want to miss that action!
