Rosemary’s treatment may sound heartless and horrific from a 2022 point of view, but in 1941 a lobotomy was often thought to be a humane procedure for extreme mental illness. Rosemary’s mental and physical illness were extreme, and considered untreatable. Institutionalization for incapacitating physical and mental illness is quite common today, as in the case of advanced Alzheimer’s, paranoid schizophrenia, or even advanced alcoholism or drug addiction. .
