Hwy 89 Betweek Turtle Rock Park & Montegomery Street Closed Due to Mud & Debris Flows

Markleeville, CA...The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) in conjunction with the California Highway Patrol and the Alpine County Sheriff, has closed State Route 89 between Turtle Rock County Park Road and Montgomery Street in Markleeville (Alpine County), due to mud and debris flows from heavy rain that washed out a portion of the roadway on Wednesday, August 3, 2022. There is currently no estimated time of reopening.

Public access is through Monitor Pass (Route 89) or Ebbetts Pass (Route 4). Caltrans District 10 crews from throughout the Mountain Region are clearing mud and debris from the travel way and are prepared to assist other agencies as needed. With support from CHP and the Alpine County Sheriff, District 10 crews will maintain a closure 24/7 to ensure the safety of the public. More thunderstorm activity is expected for the next two days. Crews will continue to monitor and patrol the area for additional flooding and debris flow activity. Motorists are strongly advised to avoid the area.

Alpine County has made available sand and sandbags at Fire Station 92 in Markleeville for resident access at 860 Hot Springs Road. For flash flood warning and watch mapping information, click here: https://arcg.is/1XqXLW. For road information, check Quickmap.dot.ca.gov. For updates, follow Caltrans District 10 on Facebook (CaltransDistrict10) and Twitter (@Caltransdist10).

So if this is a result of the fire, how about holding the USFS and their clowns accountable!! Get them out there shoveling mud and they should be paying for all of this. Let them see first hand the result of their decision to let the fire burn! Such a crock!!
