Calaveras Sheriff's Deputy Arrested After Opiod Relapse

Sonora, CA...On July 28th, 2022 the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office was made aware of an investigation/arrest involving a Calaveras County Deputy Sheriff. Pursuant to department policy, the deputy was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal and internal investigations.

In order to maintain the integrity of the investigation, the Sheriff’s Office will have no further comments on this case at this time. Any inquiries regarding the criminal investigation are referred to the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office or the Tuolumne County District Attorney’s Office.

Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office Press Release Information:

TUOLUMNE COUNTY MAN ARRESTED ON DRUG AND GUN CHARGES

On Tuesday, July 26th, the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office received a Suspected Child Abuse Report (SCAR) alleging active drug abuse by a parent. Detectives began to investigate the allegation that 33-year-old Timothy Ball, who had a history of alcohol and opiate abuse, had recently relapsed. Investigators discovered that Ball had gone to rehab multiple times for addiction treatment. They also found physical evidence that Ball had recently relapsed on opiates while in the possession of firearms.

On Thursday, July 28th, detectives served a search warrant at Ball’s home in the area of Columbia Village Drive in Sonora and confiscated several firearms. The same day, investigators spoke with Ball at the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office, where Ball is employed as a Deputy Sheriff, and found additional evidence of opiate addiction. Ball was arrested and booked at the Dambacher Detention Center (DDC) on the charge of being an addict in possession of a firearm.

We are working in collaboration with Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office with this criminal investigation. Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an administrative investigation based on their personnel rules and regulations.

Calaveras has been in the news a bit lately and not in good ways. This is tragic. Hope Mr. Ball gets the help he needs.

If this was a regular civilian that comment wouldn't be so sympathetic. That man should not have been given this many chances. Shame on our police department.

did he go to rehab while employed as a Deputy for Calaveras county?
Huge liability for the county and unsafe to have armed public servants with known addiction / alcohol issues.
Was this not addressed or is their a culture of covering up? Has he been involved in any officer related shootings? It’s rare but I believe we had 1-2 in the last few years.

A press release detailing this would be helpful. If the county gets sued we rhe taxpayers have to foot the bill for his legal defense. Even if he’s guilty and found culpable.

Yes, they were aware of his addiction problems. Another article I read has more details. He did go into a rehabilitation center while employed by our department. So, we paid for that too.
