The Arnold Tesla Supercharger Station ~ Lisa Kramer

Arnold, CA...Letter To The Editor below regarding the Tesla Supercharger station being constructed behind the Meadowmont Shopping Center in Arnold. I am a concerned citizen who has watched in horror as other high risk areas in California burn, nearly to the ground, I don't want to see that happen to the town I love and our precious Stanislaus Forest. I feel the location of this project - at the back of the center, rather than the large, half empty parking lot along the highway is shortsighted and potentially dangerous for a variety of reasons I elaborate on below.

My name is Lisa Kramer.

I am a full-time, nine-year resident of Arnold.

My home is directly behind the west end of the Meadowmont Center, where a Tesla Supercharger Station is currently under construction behind the center in the northwest corner, in clear line-of-sight from my home and those of my neighbors.

On behalf of the concerned residents of the Meadowmont Property Owners Association, we herein address our issues with the new Electric Vehicle Charging Station (EVCS) currently under construction at this location.

I am not opposed to a beneficial EVCS station in Arnold on this property.

If this EVCS was being in plain view of the public and travelers, with easy access on and off Highway 4, with ample and safe space away from a densely forested, quiet neighborhood with easy access for all vehicles, I would be applauding the effort.

Instead of cheerleading this vital and necessary “green” infrastructure addition to our community, I must address important potential risks.

The now under construction EVCS is hidden from view, in the back northwest corner of Meadowmont Center, not easily accessible and out of sight of drivers.

This is problematic as allowances for the EVCS permitting, site selection, and construction appears to be rushed, and any oversight or consideration to the neighboring community, environment, ingress and egress, and fire and security has been completely neglected as part of the EVCS ordinance and ministerial permitting process.

The potentiality of electric car fires is even more terrifying compounded by the tight quarters location of this EVCS.

There is only a narrow - barely - two-lane-wide road around the west end of the center, which is continuously used for deliveries to all of the businesses.

A collision at this ingress and egress point would block access to the EVCS.

In the winter, snow would create additional ingress and egress challenges.

24/7/365 access to the ECVS presents a multitude of security and vagrancy issues, including additional light and noise pollution.

But, are there plans for standard service station amenities such as trash, restroom facilities, vending, and air pumps?

Addressing these and other issues, especially the fire risks, is a priority the Board of Supervisors must immediately address on behalf of the Arnold community, as it is one of the Top 10 most at risk wildfire communities in California.

Residents and businesses must be diligent to mitigate fire risks, but an EVCS constructed without commonsense and necessary fire, safety and public works code compliance is unacceptable risk for our unique region.

I appreciate your consideration.
Respectfully,
Lisa Kramer

Vagrancy issues? Seems like a stretch.

You must not spend much time in Arnold.
Plenty of vagrants. People turn away when they see a homeless person not wanting to believe they exist in paradise.
    Believe.
    They exist in Arnold.
East end of White Pines Lake is an entire encampment.

Vagrants behind Meadowmont have been an issue for over 30 years.
You should have asked, and been told so by your realtor before you bought.

Homeless and vagrant don't exist in red states.

However, the quality of life in red states is equivalent to a homeless lifestyle, healthcare, mortality, etc.

There have been a few instances of Tesla’s giant battery banks catching on fire, but I can’t find an instance of a stationary charger causing a fire.

It is hard to take this complaint seriously when that nutjob Christopher Buttner is making it an issue. He wants to find fault with everything the county or the local businesses do.

All of these are valid issues; the location of the charging stations is poor at best. It should be out in the open near Hwy 4 both for visibility and fire fighting concerns. Unfortunately this was not the decision of the residents or fire department. Of curse the country would welcome these stations no matter where they are located since it is a benefit, especially to visitors and tourists, who spend money here which increases country revenue! The safety of residents is inconsequential.

There's a very large generator for temporary power right next to the charging station where's the fuel being stored and cedar trees just dying to go up close by. HALT CONSTRUCTION remember Paradise, Ca. I asked a grocery clerk about the charging station and was told they were not to comment about it. WTF

^Baloney people! For christ's sake, get a grip.

This is technology applied and tested in millions of applications and installations at this point.

This equipment and it's installation are subject to UL testing and listings, NFPA standards, and the NEC code for installations.

You may not like it where it's at but consider this same equipment is commonly installed in above and below ground parking structures, not known for easy assess, ingress or egress. Really? Getting out in/out of here would be more difficult than a parking garage.

I recently saw a 30 to 40 charger station in Mammoth. The site itself was surrounded and covered with Jeffrey Pines. The neighborhood was entirely high density 2 and 3 story multiple family housing.

If you use your critical thinking skills here it's easy to see this is simply the community thinking it knows best how their neighbor should use their property. That, is nothing new in this county.

And Hamilton: you've put 3 opposition opinions on the Soapbox. None in support.

Do you have a dog in this fight?

          That's good to hear.

However, short of that it would be interesting to hear from the fire chief if this installation IS ACTUALLY IN VIOLATION of any applicable fire standard they know of?

Is the location actually in violation?

Maybe you could do an interview or ask the chief to submit a letter.

EMF = ElectroMagnetic Frequencies in relatively high dosage are generated by the chargers. They are like having a giant cell phone or microwave oven next to your head when you are nearby charging your battery. Prolonged or high dosage exposure can lead to hair loss, skin damage, organ and tissue damage, damage to a developing fetus, damage to bone marrow, cancer. Just keep that in mind as well as EMF wavelength and proximity to businesses with customers and employees present.

Think about it people: the fact that these in demand, high use charging stations are located where they are will elevate the priority of adjacent drives/roads for access and snow removal.
This IS BENEFICIAL.

The center itself already elevates that priority. The station should go in the main parking lot where travellers passing thru all day and night can be seen and are not disturbing the neighbors. the center's owner's claim that there isn't enough free space is simply not true, as anyone frequenting that plaza will tell you.

So the folks on Maui were told no problem, don’t worry trust your government. How did that work? Fire Depts nation wide are not prepared and in most cases don’t t know how to deal with this type of incident. The charging station alone are not catching fire it’s when they are in use. There have been fires in garages and it has been a nightmare for all.

From 2014 through 2018, local fire departments responded to an estimated average of 4,150 fires in or on service or gas station properties per year. These fires caused an average of three civilian deaths, 43 civilian fire injuries, and $30.0 million in direct property damage annually.
Many service stations have convenience stores. While electrical distribution or lighting equipment was the leading cause of structure fires at gas or service station properties, cooking ranked second.
More than half of the fires (56 percent) at these properties were vehicle fires. Three-quarters of the vehicle fires on these properties were caused by either mechanical failures or malfunctions, or electrical failures or malfunctions.
One-quarter (24 percent) of the non-rubbish outside and other fires were started by smoking materials. Another 23 percent were started by electrical distribution and lighting equipment. Although not in the top tier of causes, some type of pump was involved in 7 percent of these fires.
Thirty-eight percent of the outside trash or rubbish fires were intentionally set.

Quick -Lets get those Gas stations in Arnold closed down !!

That’s seriously funny! You forgot drunk drivers crashing into the pumps not to mention fires started by cell phone use while pumping. Static’s don’t always reflect that they are based on how many vehicles utilize the locations. Not to mention major metro locations versus rural location, but nice try!! Lol

GAS STATIONS! I was hoping someone would get around to those statistics. You found much better data than I did.
I did however see an article that had a number of over 5000 fires at gas stations in this country PER YEAR!
And we all know those stations are located on main arterials/highways in most communities, like.... Arnold!
So when it all goes up and you can't get out because the gas stations are incinerating every vehicle going down the road, write a whiny letter and send it to The Soapbox.
