Lahaina's Horrifying Fire Tragedy Can Happen in Calaveras County ~ Christopher Buttner

Murphys, CA...Emerging facts are revealing the continued escalations that lead to the staggering loss of lives and property from the Maui wildfires that, as of this date and time, have resulted in 111 deaths and a staggering 1,300 still missing, along with the near complete devastation of the historic town of Lahaina.

In a RawStory.com article of August 17, 2023, which links to several other news sources that confirm institutional incompetence and negligence, what stands out is the head of the Maui Emergency Management Agency, “Herman Andaya lacked formal experience in emergency response but beat out 40 other applicants for the job and says he was prepared.”

The article continues, “Herman Andaya was not an expert in emergency management when he was hired to lead the Maui Emergency Management Agency in 2017.”

The continuing revelations of the incomprehensible tragedy are worsened with the RawStory.com report revealing, ‘“The Maui Emergency Management Agency had the authority to issue siren warnings that might have alerted people. After Andaya’s agency decided not to sound them, many survivors reported they only became aware of the fire when they saw and smelled smoke.

Andaya said sounding the sirens wasn’t an option officials considered because they’re “mainly used for tsunamis.” That’s why they’re mostly located on the coast, he said.’ https://www.rawstory.com/maui-emergency-management/

According to an article of August 11, 2023 on Honolulu Civil Beat, “Neither Maui’s fire chief nor its top emergency management official were on the Valley Isle on Tuesday despite the wildfires there being well underway.“ https://www.civilbeat.org/2023/08/mauis-top-emergency-officials-were-off-island-as-wildfires-hit-lahaina/

In an article appearing on August 17, 2023 at NBC San Diego, “Maui's top emergency official resigns after criticism for not activating sirens during fire.”

https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/national-international/mauis-top-emergency-official-is-out-after-failing-to-sound-sirens-as-fires-approached/3287252/#:~:text=The%20head%20of%20the%20Maui,killed%20at%20least%20111%20people.

From the RawStory.com article, cited above,  “Asked about Andaya’s resume, David Hafner, a retired telecommunications planner for the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, questioned whether his relative inexperience affected his agency’s performance in a crisis.”

“It’s a good ol’ boy network,” Hafner said. “This time it cost lives.”

On the homepage of Calaveras2024Election.com, we cite our primary effort to better Calaveras County as follows, We are done tolerating county-sanctioned and institutionalized conflicts of economic interests, cronyism and exclusionary collusion through the willful suppression of entrepreneurialism and innovation in favor of select support of legacy personalities, businesses and industries through the advocacy of inexperienced and - we allege - inept individuals entrenched in a range of both Calaveras County governmental and business bureau leadership positions.”

The timeline of the Maui wildfire is horrifying… the town of Lahaina was burned to the ground in only 65 minutes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Hawaii_wildfires

If you think a tragedy of this magnitude cannot happen here in Calaveras County, think again.

Calaveras County’s government failed to adequately fund our fire districts or the Sheriff’s Department, while allowing the inappropriately sited construction of a Tesla Supercharger Station at Meadowmont Center in Arnold adjacent to a residential community.

What was your point?
You give plenty of references to the reader of sites they can go to. What is it that you wanted to say?
A Lahaina type fire can happen anywhere given the right conditions. We all know that. If you don't prepare then a tragedy can happen. Understood.
The problem is, you can't stop Mother Nature. You can slow her down so that you can head to safer ground, but you can never stop her.
Last night's lightning is a good example. Somewhere among those many lightning strikes is a smoldering tree. CalFire knows it. The trick is to catch it before it spreads into an inferno. Plenty of dry fuel out there. You can't be fooled into thinking the moisture that came with last night's storm will keep things from getting out of hand. The next few days will be interesting. High winds. Dry fuels. Lightning strikes.
You can't stop these things.
Again, what were you trying to say Buttner?

Don't be silly. The science and engineering behind ER chargers is sound. More worrisome is the number of good ol' boys driving around in their beaters that haven't been inspected in decades.

EV chargers. But to the point, their risk is no more dangerous than any other form of electrical connection. Proper use & installation key.

Buttner is a fearmonger and a narcissist.

While of course fire is always on all our minds this time of year, Buttner wants us to blame someone for something that "might" occur - a catastrophic fire with poor government response.

He doesn't seem to understand that we have a rural county with many low income households and in general will not vote to raise taxes to provide ourselves with more emergency services.

He instead has big city thinking. Dude, back off.

Look at his website, full of ranting against whomever is in his crosshairs at the moment.

I wonder what it feels like to be the least disliked person in Murphys???

The Maui fire cannot "happen anywhere" it is an island with unique geographic features and weather patterns. The entirety of this rant is founded on one raw.com article, and reeks of bias.

As far as the election 2024 mission statement, good God man, stop abusing your thesaurus.

The responder's point is that we have the experience and resources in CA that Maui did not. Yes, deadly file can happen anywhere including here but we have the manpower, equipment and budget to respond - so far. This is a first for HI and there will be many lessons learned.

Arnold especially is very vulnerable to a Paradise/Maui fire. There’s only one way out that can’t handle a mass evacuation. One person abandons their car on 4 and everyone is trapped. The best we can do is be prepared to self-evacuate early and maybe leave town if the winds get crazy.
And download the Watch Duty app- it will let you know of a fire near you.

I had been at Murphys Park last night enjoying the music and could see lightning off to the south starting around 8:30 ish. Maybe 10 till, the band mentions some sprinkles starting to fall, so I booked it for home. At 9:05, we had a huge clap right over the house and Murphys turned black.. within a few secs. My lights came back on,thinking everyone had juice, but Lo and behold my generator had kicked on. I’m fortunate enough to have a Generac which runs off of propane or natural gas. Point being, our Governor, who would love to be the next president has been on a campaign to get us off of propane and natural gas. If so,my generator would be useless! This man has had 0 accomplishments as a governor, and many of you are itching to vote for him. Better think twice, the only people that will be able to afford to live here are the overpaid tech people, and those on public assistance, electricity will be very expensive! Have any of you tried to heat with electricity? It’s worthless, you freeze to death, and when your bill shows up, you feel like you just bought the provider! Gavin Newsome will do anything to get elected Prez, he’s a typical morally, defunct loser!

When Gavy refers to his wife as his “first” partner, I’m sure she understands that well, that leaves room for multiple partners. Only someone that is related to Nancy would understand such logic! Remember the night Paul crashed his Porsche into someone, drunk and accompanied by a female, boy, did they sweep that under the rug quickly, kinda like Hunters laptop!

Gov. Gavin Newsom's aunt, Barbara Newsom, was once married to Ron Pelosi, Nancy Pelosi's brother-in-law. Barbara Newsom and Ron Pelosi divorced in 1977.

Lahaina - Impossible Fire Conditions
Posted on: 2023-08-20 14:52:48   By: Anonymous

As in any extreme wind fire events, as was the case in Amador Co a few decades ago, all you can do is evacuate. Fire fighting resources cannot fight these fire events, the main chore is to warn , evacuate in the fire path.

Lahaina had 70-80 mph winds. All that can be done is alert and evacuate.
Sadly the siren was either inoperable, or was not used in the impression the authority in charge thought citizens would go the the hills, for the siren was used for tsunami, not fire.

There were many reasons for the sad losses of life and historic buildings.
The electricity should of been shut off, as PG&E now does after so many PG&E caused fires due to wind and live power lines going down, or trees contacting them.
The Hi power utility had not learned from the many PG&E caused fires, which continue to occur, due to a slow utility response.
Extreme events call for extreme responses, to err on the side of safety should be a priority, not a hard leaned lesson.

What is needed is competent managers in extreme conditions, not better fire response. CalFire does an excellent job when allowed to act quickly.
The Butte fire was allowed to grow to an extreme fire due to EBMUD's NO to the use of aerial fire suppression immediately in the beginning of the fire. The delay in suppression allowed the fire to explode, a devastating fire for the county.

So that’s not entirely true. Some of it may be, however Calfire TCU Chief refused to allow fire resources to prepare or respond to the Moke Hill / Hwy 26 area Knowing that the fire would at some point come across the river into Calaveras County. Once it arrived the resources both local and state were completely mismanaged. There are other factors of mismanagement on record, the fire should have never done the amount of damage that it did. So, don’t hold your breath that. Calfire is capable of managing these incidents. As an example, the evacuation during the Old Gluch Fire per state review was successful. Recommendations for future incidents was recommended and ignored by Calfire. That might have helped those in Paradise and other locations. Point is, Calfire does a decent job but don’t depend on them.

I was at the arnold town hall fire meeting a few months back that Mr Hubberty had organised . It was incredibly informational with people from fire / police /county and Red Cross .
It showed me there is a very good plan in place if - God forbid- there is a big fire in Arnold .
It made me feel safer living amongst the forest .
Not sure if mr Butter was at the meeting but it doesn’t sound like he was .
