Central Sierra/Hwy 4 Fishing Report for Week of October 26th, 2008~By Bill Reynolds of Ebbetts Pass Sporting Goods
Lake Alpine has been producing big beautiful rainbows. The nights are cooler and the water temperature has dropped, and the fish are very active. The ramp is out of the water, so if you have a large boat you won't be able to launch. You will need a pontoon style boat or small aluminum boat. Bait casters should try Gulp Power Bait, Floating Power Eggs, and nightcrawlers. Fly fishermen have doing excellent using Adams, woolly buggers, and caddis flies. Lure casters should try Rapala's, and Kastmasters......
Spicer Lake has been excellent. In order to launch you will need a 4-wheel drive and a smaller boat. Trollers should try Apex, Needlefish, Glitter Bugs, or Assassin lures behind a small dodger tipped with a nightcrawler or try a flasher/nightcrawler combo. Bank fishermen have had success using Gulp Eggs, Gulp Power Bait, Gulp Nightcrawlers, salmon eggs, nightcrawlers, and floating Power Eggs. Fly fishermen should try stimulators, woolly buggers, blue wing olive, and adams flies. Lure casters should try Rooster Tails, and Panther Martin spinners.
Mosquito Lake has been tough due to lack of recent trout plants. Fly fisherman should try stimulators, black ants, hoppers, parachute black ants and black flying ants, elk hair caddis, adams, mosquitos, and woolly buggers, Lure casters should try black or black and gold Panther Martin, black Rooster Tails or try the flies with a cast-a bubble. Bait casters should try Gulp Power Eggs, Gulp Power Bait, floating Power Eggs, nightcrawlers, crickets, and salmon eggs.
The North Fork of the Stanislaus has been tough due to no recent trout plants. Baitcasters will probably have the best luck split-shotting Crickets, or inflated worms with a 15 to 20 inch leader. Fly casters can try bead head nymphs, adams, and bead head woolly buggers, blue wing olive, and humpys. Lure casters can try Panther Martin spinners, Rooster Tails, Rapala's or Kastmasters.
