All Day The 2019 Calaveras County Airport Fly-In & Open House
San Andreas, CA...On Saturday April 27th Calaveras Airport and the Mother Lode Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) chapter 484 will be hosting our annual open house and Fly-In. For more than 20 years now this event is popular with our local community and for many California pilots who fly in just to relax, eat, and enjoy their day here in the scenic Mother Lode.

We will have classic cars on display along with the Mountain RC club's static display of their radio controlled airplanes. Antique, classic, and experimental aircraft will fly in to participate in our airport day event. We start the day with a pancake breakfast offered by Tri-Dam Lions Club. Our EAA chapter 484 will host a BBQ lunch and the Murphy's Boy Scout Troop 473 will be serving up hot dogs.

Musical entertainment will be provided throughout the day starting with “The Calaveras Community Band” followed by “The Rusty Rockers”.

We are expecting Cal Fire and the Highway Patrol to set up information booths. Cal Fire will have a fire truck display. CHP is planning to fly in a helicopter to put on display along with one of their patrol cars.
Very popular are the scenic airplane rides offered throughout the day starting around 8:30am. Our local pilots donate their time, fuel, and airplanes for the wonderful experience of viewing the Mother Lode from the air. Tickets sell out early and the line gets long so come out for breakfast and enjoy an early morning flight!

A nominal donation for the airplane rides of $10 for children and $20 for adults goes to our EAA chapter 484 for their scholarship fund. These funds are given to aspiring youths in our Young Eagles Program that desire to pursue an aviation career. The national EAA organization has flown over 2 million kids between the ages of 8-17. Our EAA chapter 484 hosts a Young Eagle Flight event each month between May and October.

Make Calaveras Airport you destination for the day! For more information you can contact Kathy Zancanella at 209-736-2501 or by email at

10:00 AM - 12:00 PM Old Timers Museum Walking Tours Are Every Saturday at 10am.
Murphys, CA...Each Saturday morning the Old Timers Museum in Murphys offers a historical walking tour of Murphys. No reservation necessary. Meet at the Museum, 470 Main St, Murphys, across from the Hotel 10 am. Walk is 1-1/12 hours.

A stroll down tree-lined Main Street transports visitors back to the mid-1800s with buildings bearing thick stone walls, iron shutters and pastoral gardens with white picket fences. Once you experience the charm and hospitality of Murphys, the historic “Queen of the Sierra”, you’ll want to come back again and again!

Rich in Gold Rush History, Murphys today is a vibrant, thriving community of over 2,000 residents. Many of the surrounding hillsides are rich with the fine wine grapes grown in our area. Murphys offers wineries, art galleries, live theater, eclectic shops, fine restaurants, charming hotels and B&B’s as well as a multitude of outstanding outdoor recreational opportunities.

Murphys’ colorful past came alive in 1848 when John and Daniel Murphy established a trading post and gold mining operation in the area that is now their namesake. True entrepreneurs with the luck of the Irish, they were a part of the very first immigrant party – the Stephens-Townsend-Murphy families – to successfully bring wagons over the Sierra in 1844, paving the way for westward migration. John and Daniel’s cries of “Gold!” were among the first heard in California. It is reported that the brothers took two million dollars in gold ore from the Murphys Diggins in one year’s time, making them millionaires before the age of 25. The sizzling Gold Rush camp of Murphys also played host to President Grant, Mark Twain and Black Bart. And in some circles, to an even more famous chap – a young, inquisitive lad who literally changed the scientific world, Dr. Albert Michelson.

Our friendly residents invite you to revisit the past while exploring the “new” upscale Murphys. Guided walking tours of the town’s many historic buildings including the home of Albert Michelson, the first American Nobel Prize winner, are conducted every Saturday at 10:00 a.m., starting in front of the Old Timers Museum on Main Street.

02:30 PM - 04:30 PM Mountain Melody Women's Chorus Spring Concert
Mountain Ranch, CA...Fresh from our thrilling concert in Carnegie Hall where we performed with a 200+ voice women's chorus in a program entitled "Magnificat, Music in Celebration of International Women's Day," we will be performing a program of tunes celebrating the vibrant city of New York. The New York concert held in the famous Stern Auditorium in Carnegie Hall was well received by all who had the good fortune to hear it. The program was varied and showcased music from the late 1700's to the 1930's as well present day contemporary composers.

Mountain Melody represented Calaveras County beautifully in NYC. We added lovely singing to the combined women's chorus, bringing finessed and blended tones. It was a fabulous experience to sing on the Carnegie Hall stage, and to reflect on the musical history that has taken place in this legendary space.

Mountain Melody is so grateful and thankful to our wonderful community who supported us in participating in this amazing event.

07:00 PM Murphys Creek Theatre's "Barefoot in the Park" is April 26th to May 19th
Murphys, CA...Love conquers All... Right? Opposites attract in Murphys Creek Theatre's hilarious spring production of Barefoot in the Park Newlyweds Paul & Corie Bratter have found the perfect little love nest in New York City. Never mind that you have to climb up 5 flights to get to it (6 if you count the front stoop) and that the heater works backward AND the forecast calls for snow! Oh, and there’s a hole in their skylight...Love can conquer all, right?

It's Neil Simon at his best. Barefoot in the Park debuted on Broadway in 1963 and became wildly successful. The tenth longest running non-musical play in Broadway History in fact. His follow up play was also a smash hit... ‘The Odd Couple.’

Overall, Simon garnered 17 Tony nominations and won three. During one season, he had four successful plays running on Broadway at the same time, and in 1983 became the only living playwright to have a New York theatre, the Neil Simon Theatre, named in his honor. Simon also drew "extensively on his own life and experience" for his stories, with settings typically in working-class New York City neighborhoods, similar to ones in which he grew up. In 1983, he began writing the first of three autobiographical plays, Brighton Beach Memoirs (1983), Biloxi Blues (1985) and Broadway Bound (1986). With them, he received his greatest critical acclaim. After his follow-up play, Lost in Yonkers (1991), Simon was awarded a Pulitzer Prize.

With a deft hand, Maryann Curmi is in her element directing this gem. "I absolutely LOVE Simon's writing, it's real, it's raw and it's ridiculous! "His knack for taking unsuspecting, completely lovable characters and tossing them in a ring just to see what happens is unparalleled. Having a cast that is such fun to work with makes it easy too!" says Curmi.

She's happy to be back at MCT after directing successful runs of "Over the River and Through the Woods", "Last of the Red Hot Lovers", Driving Miss Daisy" and "The Foreigner".

Leading the way as the newly weds are Michelle Low as Corie Bratter and Robbie Allen as Paul Bratter. "It's such a joy to revisit one of my favorite roles" says Allen, who, with Low, played Corie and Paul together 10 years ago, "we're older and a little wiser and are seeing these roles with fresh eyes. Our life experiences since the first go around have brought our understanding of these characters to new, hopefully funnier, heights."

The cast also consists of newcomers to the MCT stage David Rodrigues as the wacky neighbor Victor Velasco and Diane Rodrigues as Corie's straight laced mother, Ethyl Banks. Although new to MCT, David and Diane are no strangers to the stage, garnering impressive theatre resumes spanning decades.

Rounding out the cast is MCT alum Kirk Summers and the wise hard working Harry Pepper and newcomer Dave Stapp as the Delivery Man. Kirk was last seen in Inspecting Carol and The Foreigner.

Please take a walk in the Park with us.. We'll even let you keep your shoes on!

Barefoot in the Park runs April 26th - May 19th Thursday, Friday and Saturday @ 7pm Sundays @ 2pm
