All Day Kindness Week in Calaveras County
San Andreas, CA...The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors to Proclaim the week of February 10th through February 15th, 2020 as Kindness Week in Calaveras County and further deem the County as a Random Acts of Kindness Zone

DISCUSSION/SUMMARY:
Seeds of Kindness was formed in 1994 in Angels Camp, spearheaded by Jim & Judy Bergantz, then owners of Bergantz Nursery.
A small group of local residents are working together to encourage and promote random acts of kindness throughout Calaveras County. In 1995, the Angels Camp City Council passed a proclamation that Angels Camp is a Kindness Zone. We are asking the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors to pass a county-wide Kindness Zone proclamation as well.

Our goal is to purchase 8,000 “Pass It On” kindness ribbons and support materials. This year, as in the past, the Seeds of Kindness project will encourage and work with Calaveras County schools, organizations and businesses to create an increased awareness for being kind. The light blue ribbons will be distributed county-wide; when a ribbon-bearer sees an act of kindness being done, they are to sign the back of the ribbon and pass it on. The idea is that the ribbons will encourage acts of kindness throughout the county.
Kindness donations will be used to purchase three miles of light blue ribbon, (to be displayed in and around buildings), 8,000 “Pass It On” ribbons and a large kindness banner for each elementary school in the county.

We invite everyone to join us in celebrating the 2020 Ripples of Kindness Project in Calaveras County February 10-15, 2020. To learn more about random acts of kindness activities, visit the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation website at www.actsofkindness.org.

AMA Mission
Angels – Murphys – Arnold Booster’s Club (AMA) was developed and will continue to operate as a volunteer organization aimed at promoting and encouraging equal access to athletics for youth in the Angels, Murphys and Arnold vicinities. AMA athletic programs are designed to educate, encourage and enable youth of all backgrounds and abilities to develop athletic skills, sportsmanship, respect, and team camaraderie. AMA further strives to maintain a safe and disciplined environment for the personal development of each athlete. It is the goal of AMA to generate positive changes in the lives of youth and provide inspiration for both participants and volunteers as they work together toward these goals.

About AMA
AMA stands for Angels – Murphys – Arnold, and has been a strong force supporting kids sports programs since 1971. Much of AMA’s success should be credited to the original founders. Around the end of 1969, a few men, Larry Ziehlke, Millard Smallin and Dan Miller, were trying to put a football team together for the kids in the community. In moving forward with their ideas, these men were joined by Ray Shires, Terry Erickson, Don Peirano and Bob Sanders to form the AMA Booster’s Club in 1971. After a great deal of hard work and dedication, the first Pop Warner Football Teams were fielded. These men inspired the local community to donate to their youth sport program. For the community, it was a matter of pride to be able to contribute to AMA. One contributor, Dave Copello, took interest in AMA and offered to help this organization. Subsequently, Dave Copello donated six acres to build softball fields for the girls, since little league already had a place to play. In order to begin development on Copello Park, many volunteers came forward to donate their time and equipment. Mother Lode Engineering, Fletcher Construction, Sutton Construction, Hydrox Inc., George Reed Inc., Baileys Masonry, Wayne Segale General Contractor and Ray Shires Excavating were the pioneers of contributions that helped build Copello Park. In 1974, Dave Copello passed away, but not before he saw most of Copello Park completed. His legacy is still with us as he left AMA 5/7 of his estate.

Along with donations to the Club, AMA has maintained many types of fundraisers throughout the years. In the mid-70’s, AMA began the tradition of parking cars at the Fair as well as other events such as the Mountain Aire Concerts, the Camel Races, the Harvest Festival, the Renaissance Fair and most recently the Ironstone Vineyard Concerts. Currently, AMA carries on the tradition of parking cars at the Fair as well as the Bret Harte FFA Oysters ‘n Oinkers event. Fair Parking and our Annual Crab Feed are the principal fundraisers that benefit the maintenance and improvements for Copello Park, as well as purchasing insurance, sports equipment, uniforms and other necessary operational items.

As the Club evolved over the years, AMA has sponsored the annual Boys and Girls Basketball Tournament organized by Dave Cosgrave, the AMA Wrestling Tournament under the direction of Mike Burke, and the Girls Ponytail Softball League under the direction of Bill Fish, with significant help from Darlene Sanders and Sharon Canepa.

AMA benefits youth of ages between 6 to 15 years old. These activities have included such sports as basketball, cheerleading, football, ponytail softball, snow sports, soccer, summer softball, swimming, volleyball and wrestling. Over the years, AMA has supported many youth activities such as high school – middle school – grammar school sports programs, the Jr. Livestock Auction at the Fair, local Jr. Olympics, Special Olympics, Academic Decathlon’s, the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, FFA, 4-H, Little League, MACTA Tennis and more. AMA also has a Scholarship Program that benefits past AMA participants for college; (8) $500.00 scholarships yearly.

What is so remarkable about AMA is that it operates solely on volunteers. Not only are there nine directors, (three from the Mark Twain School District - three from the Vallecito School District - three At-Large), there are also commissioners, coaches, spouses and other volunteers that make these programs possible. Copello Park was built by and has been maintained by volunteers since 1971.

AMA’s mission is to involve youth in sports related recreational activities. Through our sports programs, we have seen many lives change for the better. Our youth learn respect, safety, sportsmanship, team play, fundamentals and skills needed to become successful athletes, future leaders within our community, and upstanding individuals. With the help of donations, fundraising and volunteers, we can continue to support and improve our youth programs.

07:00 PM Proof is coming to Murphys Creek Theatre February 14th - March 8th
Murphys, CA...Launching Murphys Creek Theatre’s 2020 Season is David Auburn’s Pulitzer and Tony Award winning play, Proof. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Proof is a story with characters so evidently full of flaws that we can easily relate to a few of them in ourselves. They are tough and resilient in the face of common and uncommon adversity, and still they trudge on with heartfelt ferocity.Proof: (/pro͞of/) noun 1. evidence or argument establishing or helping to establish a fact or the truth of a statement. When most people think of this play's title, it is typically understood that there is a double meaning. The associations with mathematics and evidence are commonly recognized. There is another, less common association, however. adjective 1. able to withstand something damaging; resistant.

Living in the shadow of her father (a world-renowned mathematician), Catherine lives with the burden
of his mental illness, a strained relationship with her sister, adoration from one of her father’s former
students, and the possibility that she might have inherited more from her father than his propensity for
math.

These characters are just words on a page and, as incredible as they are, they are nothing without the
human soul. With this as his main focus, director Todd Thomas has assembled a veritable hand-picked,
gypsy family of brilliant talent from near and far who bring so much life to these words that each phrase
they utter is a breathtaking journey of tender, incendiary, hilarious, and heartbreaking moments.
Todd Thomas, having started his professional acting career with MCT almost two decades ago, returns
from his time in NYC and Portland Oregon to direct this season’s opener. Thomas tells us, “I have always
been fond of this script and I was so excited when Robbie Allen sent me his picks for this season.” It
turns out that both Artistic Director Robbie Allen and Thomas have portrayed the role of Hal in previous
productions. Thomas goes on to say, “We both had very high expectations for the level of talent in this
production, but we didn’t see much turnout for Proof at our General auditions. After discussing it with
Robbie, I decided to reach out to some of the talented people I have met during my career. I could never
have imagined how fruitful that would be.”

Michael Crich, an actor-turned pilot-turned actor, portrays the world famous and wildly charming
mathematical genius, Robert. Since returning to the stage a few years ago, he has performed in over 25
productions in the Motherlode. A rare gem in the region, Crich’s moments on stage as Robert are potent
and unapologetic.

Sarah Coykendall is Claire, Catherine’s financial analyst sister who resides in NYC. A former resident of
Calaveras County, Coykendall is Associate Director of the annual Bracebridge Dinner at Yosemite,
former Impact Theatre company member, founder of Splathouse Theatre in Oakland, and one of Todd’s
friends since she was a teenager.

Hal is tackled by Jon Verkler. A Chicago native, Verkler studied with Second City in Chicago, the famous
Improv and sketch comedy school before moving to Portland and working with several local theatres.
Verkler and Thomas met in Portland while performing in a 10-minute play festival. After discovering that
Jon was not only hilarious, but extremely intense and moving, Jon was most recently cast as Adam
in Missing Link Theatre Company’s production of The Shape of Things to which he received many a
standing ovation.

Our Catherine is brought to life by Lauren Elyse Taylor. Born and Raised in Los Angeles, Taylor works in
both film and stage. Currently based in Oakland, Lauren has studied with Shakespeare &
Company in Lenox Massachusetts, Howard Fine Acting Studio in Los Angeles, The American
Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, and The Waterfront Playhouse and Conservatory in Berkeley
California. From day one, she has entrenched herself with the cast as if she had known them her whole
life.

Where does this all take place? In a house. Not just any house, though. A Chicago-style, 2-story house
built by Micki Dambacher, Jack Summers, and Naomi Elias. Perhaps the largest set design undertaken
yet, there is quite literally a house on stage!
