09:00 AM National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day, May 6th
Arnold, CA...The HWY 4 Firewise Committee Presents: National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day, MAY 6, 2017. At Independence Hall, 1445 Blagen Rd., White Pines/Arnold, CA 9a -12p BBQ to follow, sponsored by Cal-Waste.

Residents living in high-risk wildfire areas who want to take action steps to increase their safety but are unsure about how to start can now find solution-oriented information, and the inspiration, they need to organize and accomplish wildfire risk reduction projects in their community.

The Hwy 4 Firewise Committee is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and State Farm for the fourth annual Wildfire Community Preparedness Day event on May 6, 2017, which helps communities prepare for and work together to reduce their risk of wildfire damage.

Preparedness Day is a call to action that gives people of all ages a chance to plan and participate in a risk reduction or wildfire preparedness activity that makes their community a safer place to live.

Continued drought, hotter temperatures, and overgrown understory are major contributors to the increased wildfire activity we are experiencing in California, That’s why the greater Arnold Community has organized and is working with our State, Federal and local agencies which are committed to working together with NFPA and State Farm to make our community safer from the threat of wildfire. We believe Preparedness Day is a great way to raise awareness of this important issue.

Featured Speakers will be PG&E/ACRT Representative, tree/log removal; National Fire Prevention Association Video, Radiation and Firebrand Demonstration “Your Home Can Survive a Wildfire”; USDA Entomologist, Beverly Bulaon; Cal-Fire Unit Forester, Adam Frese; Joan Lark, Ebbetts Pass Fire District; Mike Miller, Calaveras Tree Mortality Task Force; Mike Oliveira, District 3 Supervisor.

Information/Solution Tables: Amature Radio, Insurance, tree services, loans, needle disposal bins, seedlings, tool rental, Homeowner Grants and much more

Through these educational, individual and group activities, residents in the greater Arnold Community can learn more about the importance of wildfire preparedness, planning, and the power of prevention.

Independence Hall Community Center - History

Independence Hall Community Center, Arnold, California, was officially established in 1974. From its inception, the Hall has served as a non-profit, non-tax-supported community facility for the Ebbetts Pass area. Originally, the Hall was the Avery School, a one-room elementary school with a divider creating two classrooms.

The attendance area extended along California Highway 4 from Camp Connell nearly to Murphys. The first function to be held in the building was a school Christmas program in December, 1941. The school was rededicated in 1964 as Hazel Fisher Elementary School in honor of its first principal and teacher, Miss Hazel Fisher. Following construction of a new Hazel Fisher Elementary School, the original building was signed over to the Ebbetts Pass Wonderland Association and in recognition of our nation’s bicentennial was renamed Independence Hall. The Hall was dedicated and remains this area’s community center.

02:30 PM - 04:30 PM Mountain Melody Concert "Colors Of Spring"
Spring 2017 is shaping up to be a very colorful time of year for Mountain Melody Women's Chorus.

"Colors of Spring" is the title of their upcoming concert series. The concert includes several lovely tunes sung in Spanish, "De Colores" and "Duermete Nino."
A delightful a capella tune, "Chili Con Carne," which uses all kinds of rhythm and percussion sounds as well as melodic lines, also has a spicy Latin flavor.

Other jazzy offerings are the classic song, "Where or When," and the melodic favorite, "Long Ago and Far Away."

The vibrancy and beauty of Calaveras County is reflected in many of our musical offerings. Spring in the countryside is definitely the time to enjoy the richness and color of vocal ensemble singing.
