All Day Columbia's Glorious 4th of July Celebration!
Columbia, CA...Columbia’s Glorious 4th of July Celebration begins with an 11 a.m. flag raising and black powder musket salute Wednesday, July 4, followed by a free concert from the Lucky CuZn Brass Band playing New Orleans style and patriotic tunes, followed by the annual Independence Day parade. July 4th in Columbia has been a tradition since at least 1852 and is the longest continuously running event in the county and perhaps even the entire motherlode. It is fun for the entire family with activities for all ages. Pete Brandt, a volunteer for over 20 years has said “It’s the most fun you can have in public that’s legal”

Registration for the parade starts at 10:30 a.m. in front of the Fallon Hotel. All are welcome to march in the procession at noon, but vehicles must be at least 70 years old and animals must weigh less than 100 pounds. Awards will be given at the judges’ stand.

Other holiday activities will occur in various locations throughout Columbia State Historic Park. Games include Needle in the Haystack at 11:30 a.m. in front of the livery stable, the Watermelon Eating Contest at 1 p.m. in front of the Columbia House, the Bucket Brigade at 1:30 p.m. behind the livery stable, a Nail Pounding Contest at 1:15 p.m. in front of the Blacksmith Shop, a Greased Pole Contest at 2 p.m. between the Mercantile and the Firehouse, an Egg Relay Race and Egg Toss on Main Street at 2:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. respectively, a Cake Walk at 3 p.m. at the Fallon House Garden, and a Five Way Tug-o-War at 3:30 p.m. behind the bank across from Eagle Cottage. The Columbia Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event and all games are free although donations are welcome.

The Chamber also invites guests and Columbia residents to enjoy a pulled pork barbeque beginning at 1pm. Tickets are limited and cost $10 for adults and $6 for children. They will be available at the Chamber’s information booth the day of the event.

Event organizer Mike Keene points out that “this is not a reproduction; this is small town America doing what it does best.” The events and games are traditional and emblematic of an America that is rapidly disappearing.

San Andreas...The Calaveras Community Band, that traces its roots to the Gold Rush, will celebrate America’s 242nd birthday a concert in San Andreas, July 4. Under the direction of conductor Mic Harper the band will perform stirring patriotic music, rousing marches, old favorites and a variety of other tunes.

On Wednesday, July 4, the Independence Day concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Turner Park, 287 Treat Avenue, in San Andreas.

From 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., a barbecue dinner featuring smoked tri-tip and barrel-cooked chicken will be on sale with the proceeds benefitting the band. The band’s tenor sax player Glenn Moore owns Man On the Mountain BBQ and will be the chef. The cost of the dinner will be $15.00 per person.

There is no admission charge for either concert but financial contributions are always welcomed.

Through the cooperation of the Murphys Community Club, during the warm-weather months the band holds its weekly Monday rehearsals in the park starting with a short informal concert at 6:30 PM, followed by the rehearsal from 7:30 to 8:30 PM.

Musicians of all ages and experience are always welcome to join the Calaveras Community Band. “We invite you to join us in keeping the tradition of live community band music alive in our area." says Harper.  “We are a fun group that gets great joy out of filling the Mother Lode with music. No matter your age, you can find a place with us.”

The band is a great place for musicians to enjoy their music while helping to make Calaveras County such a special place. Anyone wanting to learn more about becoming a band member should call Carol Betz at 728-5001. The band’s website is calaverascommunityband.org.
