Bear Valley Music Festival Returns for 51st Year July 19 - August 4! Bear Valley, CA...Celebrating the start of its second half-century in the High Sierra, the Bear Valley Music Festival begins on Friday, July 19 and runs through Sunday, August 4, 2019 with a total of 14 concerts including a special free family matinee on Saturday, July 27. The festival showcases a wide selection of artists and genres including rock, classical, Broadway and jazz.
A mere 3.5-hour drive from San Francisco, Bear Valley is known primarily as a ski resort. Now in his seventh summer as music director, internationally recognized conductor Michael Morgan has put Bear Valley and the Highway 4 corridor on the map as a summer destination as well, drawing an audience of thousands.
Highlights of this year's festival include tributes to Carole King & James Taylor, Neil Diamond, Dolly Parton and Billy Joel, a concert by the legendary Mimi Fox and the Mimi Fox Jazz Trio, the return of world-famous pianist Olga Kern this time with her son Vladik Kern in Mozart's Double Piano Concerto, the world-premiere of a new commission by composer Michael Taylor, and three concert pieces for violin and orchestra featuring soloist Kelly Hall-Tompkins. The classical lineup includes Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony and Fourth Piano Concerto with soloist Llewellyn Sanchez-Werner. The Motherlode Chorale (featured last summer in Beethoven’s Ninth) will return, this time with a concert version of a hilarious Broadway musical by George and Ira Gershwin titled "Of Thee I Sing" about a US presidential candidate running on a creative and unusual platform. Michael Morgan will also conduct a special concert dedicated to symphonic movie themes, including Star Wars, E.T., Harry Potter, The Godfather and more.
"This is the most significant cultural event of the year in our scenic part of the Sierra," says executive director Eman Isadiar. "We always strive to present the widest possible variety of artists and musical styles to appeal to every taste and every generation."

Family owned and operated since 1955, Middleton’s Mark Twain Center, Inc. was originally Calaveras Mercantile bought by Hank and Matilda Middleton in 1955. Starting as a furniture, feed, fabric, and appliance business in the original 1500-sq-ft location proved to not meet the needs of the community. Hank and Mat were now raising their young family, and seeing the potential growth and needs of Calaveras County, purchased acres of land in 1960 just on the edge of town. They built and developed the first shopping center in the county. Hank anchored his 27,000 sq. ft. furniture, appliance, hardware, and gift shop with a local bank and grocery store.
Fast forward to 1977 with youngest son Bob graduating college with a BS in Business. Celebrate Murphys Homecoming Weekend! Something for Everyone July 19 - 21! Murphys, CA...There will be something entertaining for each and every member of the family during the multi-faceted Murphys Homecoming Weekend stretching from Friday, July 19 through Sunday, July 21 in and around the cool environs of the Murphys Community Park. The park activities will include the Murphys Old Timers Museum’s 70th Birthday Celebration on Friday, the traditional Murphys Homecoming on Saturday, and the Murphys School of Music’s Music Fest on Sunday. At each event there will be food, wine, beer and other drinks for sale. The park’s Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) license prohibits the bringing of wine, beer or liquor into the park at any of the events. Friends and neighbors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy a series of small town America gatherings.

The Murphys Old Timers Museum will be throwing a 70th Birthday Party on July 19 in the Murphys Community Park offering free Musical entertainment from 5 to 9 p.m. by the Calaveras/Tuolumne All Star Jam. A BBQ dinner consisting of hamburgers, the museums famous hot dogs with all the fixings, beans and birthday cupcakes may be purchased. This event will be the Museum’s summer fundraiser, so attendees are encouraged to purchase food and beverages from Helen’s Hut to assist in the Museum’s fundraising efforts. Dancing is encouraged.
The museum, which will be the beneficiary of this park event, is located in the heart of town at 470 Main St. It celebrates the town’s gold rush history with many extensive exhibits and knowledgeable docents. It is open from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday and Monday holidays. There is no admission charge. It also conducts walking tours every Saturday at 10 a.m.

The traditional Murphys Homecoming will take place for the 71st year on Saturday, July 20 starting at 11 a.m.
During the day there will be a wide variety of things to do for all ages including a water slide, dunk tank, cake walk, bounce house and a juggling clinic. A special feature will be the jailing of local celebrities in the ancient pokey and their efforts to seek bail.
From 11:30 to 1 p.m. rousing music provided by Mic Harper and the Calaveras Community Band will fill the air. Tracing its heritage to the gold rush days, the band plays a wide range of music from Sousa marches to popular show tunes. Its repertoire includes pieces for everyone’s musical taste.
Following the band concert, the ever-popular Jim Bailey and Plan B will take center stage and provide the music and public announcements until 4 p.m.
Throughout the morning, and well into the afternoon, Helen’s Hut will be the place to go to purchase barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs, ice cream, and a wide variety of beverages including beer and wine.
At 12 noon, a long-standing Homecoming tradition, the Old Timers Luncheon, sponsored by the Native Daughters of the Golden West and hosted by Murphys Senior Center, will be provided free of charge for any Murphys, Douglas Flat or Vallecito resident who has lived in the area for at least ten years and has reached the age of 70. This year the luncheon will be held at the Native Daughters Hall at 268 Main Street. Reservations are necessary and may be made by calling Sue Friedman at 728-8183. The cut off date for reservations is July 15.
In the park, at 1 p.m. the first of three much anticipated duck races will be held for the benefit of the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Foundation. Information on how to participate is available at CalaverasMentoringFoundation.org.
The day’s activities will conclude with the Third Annual Murphys Homecoming Bocce Ball Tournament starting at 6 pm. Organized by Jan Schulz and his Boccie Buddies, the tournament will feature 20 two-person teams that will descend on the recently improved bocce courts to vie for fame and prizes. “Commissioner” Schulz is taking reservations, and supplying information at 728-3753. Entry fee is $50 per team. The money raised will go to maintaining and improving the courts.
There is no admission charge for Murphys Homecoming and ample free parking is available nearby. Donations to help maintain the park are always gratefully received.

On Sunday, July 21 the Murphys School of Music will be presenting their second annual Music Fest from 12 noon to 9 p.m. A variety of local bands with a diversity of musical styles will be playing throughout the day.
The roster of bands includes Terra Manthorne & Keith Evans, Nick & Ras, Cool Beans, Plan B, Nate Nathan & The Control, Brian Jirka & The Cabby Band, Leilani & The Distractions, and Cantamos.
Each band will play a 45-minute set, except for the headliner, Cantamos, which will be on stage an hour and fifteen minutes. There will also be a student and teacher stage with mini performances in between the band set-ups.
Saxophonist and Murphys School of Music co-founder and board president Ras Beeken Dan plays sax in five out of the eight bands on this list and will be guest artist with the other three.
This is an important fundraiser for our nonprofit,” says Dan, “Proceeds will cover a lot of things: keeping our doors open, materials for the classroom and office, instruments and supplies for our Outreach Program, equipment for our new recital and performance space, and more!”
Beer, wine, and food will be available for purchase.
Tickets are $25 for adults, $10 for children. Tickets may be purchased from the schools website www.murphysschoolofmusic.com and clicking on the events page. They will also be available at the event.
Murphys School of Music is a 501(c)(3) organization that believes the Performing Arts are essential to have in every community. Ride The Rails Into History at Railtown 1897 Jamestown, CA...Ride behind a historic steam or diesel locomotive on a train trip through California’s scenic Gold Country. Murphys’ colorful past came alive in 1848 when John and Daniel Murphy established a trading post and gold mining operation in the area that is now their namesake. True entrepreneurs with the luck of the Irish, they were a part of the very first immigrant party – the Stephens-Townsend-Murphy families – to successfully bring wagons over the Sierra in 1844, paving the way for westward migration. John and Daniel’s cries of “Gold!” were among the first heard in California. It is reported that the brothers took two million dollars in gold ore from the Murphys Diggins in one year’s time, making them millionaires before the age of 25. The sizzling Gold Rush camp of Murphys also played host to President Grant, Mark Twain and Black Bart. And in some circles, to an even more famous chap – a young, inquisitive lad who literally changed the scientific world, Dr. Albert Michelson.

Spend the Summer at Big Trees State Park. Guided Hikes Every Weekend Arnold, CA...Calaveras became a State Park in 1931 to preserve the North Grove of giant sequoias. This grove includes the "Discovery Tree", also known as the "Big Stump", the first Sierra redwood noted by Augustus T. Dowd in 1852. This area has been a major tourist attraction ever since, and is considered the longest continuously operated tourist facility in California.

The story of Camp Connell Continues with Camp Connell General Store & The Beer Garden. Owner Dan Tulipani and his crew show what Mountain Life is all about.
The Camp Connell of today was largely influenced by the surging popularity of auto travel through the mountains inspired when Dr. D. Sargent of Angels Camp became the first to drive an automobile over Ebbetts Pass in 1908. Family camping was destined to become an extremely popular recreational activity To meet those demands, Jack Connell began construction of a campground, cabins, general store and gas pumps in 1928. He and his wife named their endeavor "Camp Connell". Opened for business in 1929, the general store and gas station have been in operation ever since. The Connell's continued to expand the store and added a café to serve the increasing number of visitors. By 1934 the Post Office was moved to the store and became "Camp Connell Station". The store was a local gathering place where local residents and vacationers alike would come to share news and leave messages, much as it is today. Occasionally, Circuit Court was convened in the building. Monte Wolfe, Art and Harry Schimke, the Whittles, Hunts, Tryons, Lombardis, and Airolas were frequent visitors.
While the popularity of the general store and café continued, the campground was closed in 1949 and the property was subdivided into lots selling for $600 each. The cabins remained as part of Camp Connell until the 1960's, when the highway was realigned to accommodate the ski resort and village at Bear Valley, as well as the development of Big Trees Village. The old highway became the current two accesses to Camp Connell and the property has stayed much the same ever since.
Today the Camp Connell General Store is one of the oldest Chevron stations in California as well as the longest continuously operated retail business between Murphys and Markleeville. It is a popular stop for visitors and a cherished part of the local community."

The Sequoia Woods 2019 Music in The Mountains Summer Concert Series Arnold, CA...Sequoia Woods Country Club has a complete summer music schedule to keep you entertained all summer long. Sequoia Woods Country Club is located on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada mountains, roughly between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park, at an elevation of 4000 feet. The club house is open to the public, with a bar and lounge, dining room and seasonal deli. The beautiful setting can be enjoyed from indoors or outside on the deck, with a view down the main tree-lined golf fairway.
The bar serves food several evenings each week and the restaurant is open for dinner every weekend. The dinner menu has a perfect variety of traditional favorites, with creative and contemporary preparations, and our guests marvel at the quality of cuisine to be found here, in this little mountain hamlet.
