Calling all young eagles: volunteer Experimental Aircraft Association pilots provide flights and ground school for children ages 8 to 17 to foster an interest in aviation through the EAA national Young Eagles program. 8 a.m., Calaveras County Airport, on Carol Kennedy Road off Highway 49 between Angels Camp and San Andreas, there is limited space, reservations are required, call 293-4969 or 736-2501 to confirm your flight

10:00 AM Weekend Steam-Powered Excursion Train Rides
All aboard as Railtown 1897 State Historic Park resumes its popular steam-powered excursion train rides through California’s scenic Gold Country! While the Park is open daily, on weekends beginning April 6, guests will enjoy a memorable six-mile, 45-minute round trip ride along the rails of the famous “Movie Railroad.” To kick off the new season, excursion train rides will be offered behind “Movie Star Locomotive” Sierra No. 3 on opening weekend. Plus, local residents from Calaveras, Mariposa and Tuolumne counties can visit the Park and ride completely free with proof of residency this first weekend only. And, Railtown 1897 visitors can also enjoy other opening weekend festivities such as live music, tours of the historic Roundhouse and demonstrations of the historic, belt-driven machine shop. Capacity is limited for steam-powered excursion train rides so guests are encouraged to arrive early. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the ticket window beginning at 10 a.m. on the days the trains are running. After opening weekend, Railtown 1897 SHP plans to offer steam-powered excursion train rides behind Sierra No. 3 on Saturdays and vintage diesel locomotives on Sundays through the 2013 operating season. Additionally, diesel train rides will be offered on Wednesdays throughout the summer season (July 10 through August 28). Because the schedule is subject to change with expanded service on holiday weekends, etc., visitors are encouraged to call 209-984-3953 or visit www.railtown1897.org for updated information.

Free, however, entrance fee $10 ($12 on holiday weekends) per carload applies. Guided hikes available year round. When the snow covers the ground they become guided snowshoe walks every Saturday at 1pm. Snowshoes are provided free, first come first served. No reservations are allowed. Check in at the Warming Hut no later than 12:30 pm.

The Friends of Rail Road Flat School present their 4th annual Tiger Fest Fundraiser. All funds raised go towards the enrichment program providing classes to students no longer offered in the classroom. Including arts, sewing, cooking, gardening, sports, and photography along with many more. The evening has an "African" theme this year and begins with a student drum session led by Mark Dyken. Dinner will be served from 6-8pm and is $35.00 per person or $60.00 per couple. The evening will also hold a Silent and Live Auction, 50/50 Raffle, Live Music by Nedra and Julio, as well as Gordon Rowland. PERFORMANCES FEATURE MUSIC FROM GERSHWIN AND GARLAND TO BEETHOVEN, BROADWAY AND BOLLYWOOD

New Music Director and conductor Michael Morgan has scheduled an eclectic and varied program for the 45th annual Bear Valley Music Festival, to be held July 26 through August 11 in Bear Valley in the majestic Sierra Nevada. As new Music Director, Morgan brings his widely acclaimed charisma, energy, humor and the kind of inclusive, inventive and inspiring programming that have won him audiences and honors from the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento to Europe, South America and Asia.

The 2013 line-up of Concerts with Altitude includes the Bear Valley Festival Orchestra, nine-time Grammy Award winning country and western group Asleep at the Wheel, jazz composer/pianist Taylor Eigsti, ensemble-in-residence the Delphi Trio, pianist Richard Glazier, the 2013 Gold Medalist from the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition Vadym Kholodenko, violinist /comic Dawn Harms, talented young musical stars of tomorrow in recital, a Bollywood-themed gala and auction and more. Program highlights include a Gershwin to Garland recital by pianist Richard Glazier, Beethoven’s monumental Triple Concerto, the Festival debut of country-western sensation Asleep at the Wheel, a recital of prodigiously talented young performers on their way to big careers, movie nights, a special jazz evening, wine and music pairings, an all-Mozart evening, Family day with crafts and a concert, the Delphi Trio in residence giving community concerts and master classes and more. A schedule of Festival concerts may be found below, and all performances will be in the Festival tent on the grounds adjacent to the Bear Valley Lodge unless otherwise noted.
