All Day 7th Annual Camanche & Pardee Reservoirs and Mokelumne River Cleanup
East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) will hold its 7th Annual Camanche & Pardee Reservoirs and Mokelumne River Cleanup from 9:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday, September 21, 2013. Scores of volunteers have participated in this event in the past and have hauled away cigarette butts, broken bottles, refrigerators, and more.

“This event really brings our community together. We gain a sense of accomplishment and pride from working together and keeping our beautiful Mokelumne River clean,” says Lora Sparrowk, Ranger/Naturalist II at EBMUD. “We hope to attract at least 100 volunteers for a fun and worthwhile day at the river and reservoirs.” Organizers are hopeful for large numbers of volunteers because it’s such an enjoyable and rewarding activity. After the cleanup, Camanche Recreation Company sponsors a barbecue at Camanche South Shore for all participants.

The event is part of the Great Sierra River Cleanup which is taking place on rivers throughout the Sierra region which in turn is part of the California-wide Coastal Cleanup Day. “It’s the largest volunteer effort in the state,” says Sparrowk. “This is an event for the whole family. We’re encouraging school, church, and other groups to come and join us.”

Volunteers must pre-register to take part in this event. Register on our website at: http://www.ebmud.com/recreation/waterways-cleanup or contact Lora Sparrowk at (209) 772-8337 or lsparrow@ebmud.com for more information.

01:00 PM The 10th Annual Andrew Head Cardinal Classic Memorial Golf Tournament
Arnold, CA...Andrew (Drew/Andy) Head grew up in Arnold from the 1st grade and went on to attend Bret Harte High School playing on the Bret Harte Charter Soccer Team. Drew played soccer all of his life and loved every minute of it. He even played as a young man on an adult league in Stockton. His short life ended on March 18, 2013, at the age of 29 and he left a three year old son, Lance.

That summer Drew’s friends put together a golf tournament to raise money for Lance’s college fund. It was very successful. This has become an annual event. Three years ago it was decided that it was time to “pay it forward” and we made arrangements with Bret Harte High School to give a scholarship to a graduating senior that had made soccer a part of his early life and had also played for Bret Harte. It was decided that the scholarship would be given to a graduating senior who was going to a Junior College, Community College or Trade School.

We presented our first annual Andrew Head Memorial Scholarship to Jacob Steele, a Bret Harte graduate on May 23, 2012 and our second scholarship to Mitchell Rudd in May, 2013. Money raised will benefit this scholarship fund.

04:00 PM - 07:00 PM Old Fashioned Fun During Back to School Night at Columbia State Historic Park
Columbia, CA..On Saturday, September 21, 2013, from 4:00-7:00 PM, the public is invited to participate in Back to School Night 1861 at the Old Columbia Schoolhouse in Columbia State Historic Park.

Festivities begin with music, costume dress-up, delicious hand-cranked ice cream, 1861 school lessons in the downstairs and tours of the upstairs all led by costumed docents. Games and toys of the Gold Rush time period will also be a part of the event. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic supper and a blanket or chairs to enjoy the beautiful summer evening.

This year, the park is proud to have the Fiddle Gang entertain visitors during the event. Donna Underwood, park docent and Back to School Night event coordinator comments: "The Fiddle Gang, comprised of young fiddle players, will play and sing America's favorite songs. Music was an important part of Gold Rush school and family celebrations. The event is very hands-on for all to experience student life in the 1860's. It's never too late to learn!"

The two-story brick school house on the hill was built in 1860 and the first class session began in 1861. Prior to this public school, students in Columbia could attend private schools usually held in teacher's homes. The Columbia schoolhouse is thought to be the oldest two-story brick schoolhouse in California and was used until 1937 when it was forced to close because it did not meet new California earthquake standards. The building was purchased by the State of California in 1947 and money was raised to restore it to its former glory. Dimes, nickels and pennies were collected in metal school house shaped banks throughout California and donations totaled around $57,000. Restoration of the building was completed in the 1950's.

The building is still used today for field trips to teach approximately 10,000 students what school was like during the Gold Rush. These programs are given by trained volunteers and staff members with a passion for history and reenactment.

Back to School Night is sponsored by Friends of Columbia State Historic Park. Event will run from 4:00-7:00 PM at the historic school on the hill. For more information, please contact the park office at (209) 588-9128.
