All Day Mark Twain Medical Center Showcases Local Health Resources at Fall Health Fair
San Andreas, CA...Mark Twain Medical Center presents the 21st Annual Fall Health Fair on Saturday, September 28 from 7 a.m. to noon at the Hospital Campus in San Andreas. “Participation in this event is just as enthusiastic now as it was when we started over two decades ago,” notes Doug Archer, MTMC President and CEO. “It’s a tradition – a great opportunity to find out about the latest in local resources for health care, wellness and social services.” He explains this Health Fair includes an especially wide-range of health and wellness professionals, nonprofit entities, and government agencies that collaborate in providing education, support services and lifestyle tools to the local community.

In addition, the event offers low cost health screening and services. Attendees can take advantage of a five-panel blood analysis, including a chemistry panel, thyroid, complete blood count, lipid panel, iron for women, PSA for men, and vitamin D deficiencies ($45); and Bone Density Screenings ($25). Those participating in the blood analysis should not eat or drink anything after 10 p.m. the night before. Adult Flu shots will be administered at no cost.

Archer notes over 40 community partners will be featured at the event. “They value our Health Fair as a great opportunity to offer insights into their areas of expertise including senior support and health services, health insurance information, long term and short term care, hospice, home health, mental health and nutrition. MTMC is proud to continue this tradition.”

Here is what some of the participating organizations have to share about why they are involved:

MACT HEALTH BOARD, INC., Kevin Cornwell, OD --“Access to eye care plays an integral role within health care today. Eye doctors routinely encounter the ocular manifestations of many systemic diseases through an eye exam. Many patients may be asymptomatic, yet have the signs of undiagnosed hypertension or type 2 diabetes in their eyes. Including optometry at health fairs gives patients a better understanding on the importance of receiving routine eye care to maintain their health.”

CALAVERAS COUNCIL OF GOVERNMENTS, CALAVERAS TRANSIT AGENCY, Amber Collins Executive Director– “The MTMC Health Fair is a great (and free!) resource for agencies to gain exposure with the community, as well as other organizations. This is an ideal venue for Calaveras Connect to share information about our public transit system and how to access the service.”

And for the protection of the greater public, the law requires you to vaccinate and license all dogs 4 months of age or older.

10:00 AM - 12:00 PM Old Timers Museum Walking Tours Are Every Saturday at 10am.
Murphys, CA...Each Saturday morning the Old Timers Museum in Murphys offers a historical walking tour of Murphys. No reservation necessary. Meet at the Museum, 470 Main St, Murphys, across from the Hotel 10 am. Walk is 1-1/12 hours.

A stroll down tree-lined Main Street transports visitors back to the mid-1800s with buildings bearing thick stone walls, iron shutters and pastoral gardens with white picket fences. Once you experience the charm and hospitality of Murphys, the historic “Queen of the Sierra”, you’ll want to come back again and again!

Rich in Gold Rush History, Murphys today is a vibrant, thriving community of over 2,000 residents. Many of the surrounding hillsides are rich with the fine wine grapes grown in our area. Murphys offers wineries, art galleries, live theater, eclectic shops, fine restaurants, charming hotels and B&B’s as well as a multitude of outstanding outdoor recreational opportunities.

Murphys’ colorful past came alive in 1848 when John and Daniel Murphy established a trading post and gold mining operation in the area that is now their namesake. True entrepreneurs with the luck of the Irish, they were a part of the very first immigrant party – the Stephens-Townsend-Murphy families – to successfully bring wagons over the Sierra in 1844, paving the way for westward migration. John and Daniel’s cries of “Gold!” were among the first heard in California. It is reported that the brothers took two million dollars in gold ore from the Murphys Diggins in one year’s time, making them millionaires before the age of 25. The sizzling Gold Rush camp of Murphys also played host to President Grant, Mark Twain and Black Bart. And in some circles, to an even more famous chap – a young, inquisitive lad who literally changed the scientific world, Dr. Albert Michelson.

Our friendly residents invite you to revisit the past while exploring the “new” upscale Murphys. Guided walking tours of the town’s many historic buildings including the home of Albert Michelson, the first American Nobel Prize winner, are conducted every Saturday at 10:00 a.m., starting in front of the Old Timers Museum on Main Street.

07:00 PM - 09:00 PM The Easy Leaves with opener Trevor McSpadden – Country, the lean Bakersfield sound
Usually a duo, the Easy Leaves appear as a full band for this concert.

When some folks talk of country music — or any genre, for that matter — there’s sometimes a tendency to over-generalize. For some, country means the watered-down-power-pop-with-a-touch-of-twang that dominates the airwaves. The Easy Leaves consist of Kevin Carducci (vocals, guitar) and Sage Fifield (vocals, bass), formed north of the Golden Gate in 2008. Initially, their intent was to form a traditionally oriented string band, but they found too many influences delightfully intruding — the towers of strength that are Bob Wills and Smokey Robinson were too powerful to be denied. Carducci’s musical fires were stoked by “Bob Dylan, Hank Williams [and his progeny], the Beatles, The Grateful Dead, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Gillian Welch, Otis Redding, George Jones,” among others, he said. As for Fifield, he said, “I was into a lot of your characteristic classic rock radio stuff: Stones, Who, the Dead, Floyd, Zeppelin, but also some mellow songwriter stuff: John Prine, Cat Stevens, Kris Kristofferson. For a while I lived in Northwest Pennsylvania, where a former band-mate and I began frequenting a weekly bluegrass jam. Those jams were my first foray into the world of bluegrass, and it opened my ears to a whole new world of acoustic and country music.”

The Easy Leaves have toured as a duo and as part of a full band. For their upcoming show Carducci said, “We’ll be performing with a five-piece lineup, with Vicente Rodriguez on drums, Dave Zirbel on [electric] Telecaster [guitar], and Josh Yenne on pedal steel.” Without a hint of compromise, The Easy Leaves’ inclusive-yet-very-personal approach holds much appeal for fans of Steve Earle, Whiskeytown, The Avett Brothers, and Brad Paisley.
Trevor McSpadden was raised in the Texas Hill Country and seasoned in the clubs of Chicago, and is a genuine honky tonk song and dance man. He spent five years as the lead singer of Chicago’s most beloved country band, The Hoyle Brothers, before taking to the road as a solo act. Now working out of Southern California, McSpadden is making the most of his West Coast residency. He teamed up with Grammy-winning producer Pete Anderson to record a heartbreak album called The Only Way, followed by a Bakersfield-flavored collection of love songs called Let’s Fall Together. His latest is a groovy live album recorded in the parking lot of Grand Ole BBQ in San Diego. With a little twang from Texas, a bit of grit from Chicago, and some flash from the Golden State, McSpadden remains faithful to the eternal verities of the country tradition, but nothing if not original.
The award winning historic Sutter Creek Theatre is an intimate 215 seat former silent film theatre with superb sond. Beer and wine at the venue. Tickets and video at the web site Click Text Here www.
