All Day California State Parks and CAL FIRE Prescribed Burns at Calaveras Big Trees State Park Continue Nov
Arnold, CA...California State Parks in cooperation with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) will be continuing to conduct prescribed burns in Calaveras Big Trees State Park on November 1, 2022. This is the third of a series of prescription burns planned for the park this fall.

This particular project will cover approximately 23 acres along Highway 4. Ignition is dependent on weather conditions and resources. The units have been prepared for prescription burns. Active firing is expected to last one day; however, smoke will remain in the area for some time after active firing has stopped. Visitors and residents should expect one-lane traffic control along Highway 4 during daytime hours on November 1. Motorists should exercise extreme caution driving along Highway 4 during nighttime hours from the park boundary through Arnold due to potential heavy smoke and reduced visibility.

Prescribed fire is an important, proactive resource to protect giant sequoias, and the park, from the catastrophic destruction of wildfires. As evidenced in the southern Sierra groves, dry conditions, heavy fuel loads, and high-intensity wildfires have led to the loss of giant sequoias at a rate not previously seen. Prescribed burns reduce the fuel load, can help slow or stop wildfires in treated areas, and mimic a more natural, low-intensity fire which is necessary for new sequoia growth.

Forest thinning and prescribed fire restore and maintain an ecologically healthy forest system. Additional benefits from the department’s prescribed fire program include vegetation management, wildlife habitat improvement, and enhancement of the health of the forest by removing diseased materials, restoring essential nutrients to the soil, and allowing sunlight to reach the forest floor.

In partnership with Save the Redwoods League, this year’s prescribed burns are funded througha grant from CAL FIRE’s California Climate Investments Program. The Giant Sequoia Forest Resilience Project is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide program that puts billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to work reducing GHG emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment– particularly in disadvantaged communities. The Cap-and-Trade program also creates a financial incentive for industries to invest in clean technologies and develop innovative ways to reduce pollution. California Climate Investments projects include affordable housing, renewable energy, public transportation, zero-emission vehicles, environmental restoration, more sustainable agriculture, recycling, and much more. At least 35 percent of these investments are located within and benefiting residents of disadvantaged communities, low-income communities, and low-income households across California. For more information, visit the California Climate
Investments website at: www.caclimateinvestments.ca.gov.

Although prescribed burns produce significantly less smoke than wildfires, communities near Calaveras Big Trees State Park, including Arnold, Dorrington, Big Trees Village, White Pines, Blue Lake Springs, and Love Creek may experience smoke from the burning operations.Prescribed burns produce significantly less smoke than wildfires. The department plans and coordinates these burns with the Calaveras and Tuolumne County Air Districts to minimize the smoke in surrounding communities. All burning depends on weather and air quality conditions that are favorable for smoke dispersal. If the conditions, such as weather or vegetation are not conducive for burning, the department will reschedule the burn.

California State Parks and CAL FIRE follow the safety protocols set by public health officials and make accommodations to limit exposure among first responders and field crews to protect staff from COVID-19 during prescribed burns.

For questions or comments about the project or about the prescribed burn program, contact Heather Reith, Acting Public Information Officer, at (209) 768-5217.

Calaveras Big Trees State Park preserves two groves of giant sequoias – the world’s largest trees – in the North and South Groves. Established in 1931, the park offers a mixed-conifer forest (a variety of trees living together), as well as access to the Stanislaus River, Beaver Creek, ancient volcanic formations, and natural meadows. Trails throughout the park allow you to discover the natural beauty that has awed visitors to the area since 1852.
All Day Caltrans To Begin Culvert Project on State Route 49 Near Angels Camp
Angels Camp, CA...The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will install drainage pipe systems (culverts) on State Route 49 from approximately a half-mile south of Red Hill Road to Gun Club Road near Angels Camp in Calaveras County. Culverts drain water to help prevent erosion and maintain the structural integrity of roadways. Construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, October 3 and continue until November 2022. One-way traffic control with flaggers will be employed from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Friday.

Motorists should expect 5- to 10-minute delays and are advised to use alternate routes, whenever possible.
Culverts will be installed at two locations south of Red Hill Road, one location north of Whittle Ranch Road, and one location south of Gun Club Road.

The estimated $275,00 project will be performed by Quimu Contracting Inc. of Dixon, CA.

All Day Columbia College Presents Art Exhibition Extended Through November 18th
Columbia, CA...“Pain and Beyond” – a collection of oil and mixed media paintings, completed between 2011 – 2018 by Columbia College Art Professor, Li Ching Accurso, is now on display through October 18th, in the Columbia College Manzanita Building Rotunda (11600 Columbia College Drive, Sonora). The upper level of the Manzanita Building is open to the public Monday – Friday from 8am to 5pm. During the period Li Ching worked on these pieces, she was experimenting with materials combined with oil, such as glitter, confetti, and fabric.

The ceramics that are on display were produced between 1996 – 2009, when Li Ching was continually discovering new expressive possibilities with clay.

Li Ching began painting small watercolors in February, 2022, as a convenient medium to travel with, and a discipline for painting from observation.

“In all my work, I want to express strong emotions of joy, color, hope, and enthusiasm,” Li Ching says.
A Taiwanese-American woman artist, Li Ching Accurso has served as a full-time member of the art faculty at Columbia College since 1995. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from UC Berkeley in Painting and was a Fulbright scholar.
“This is a beautiful and impressive collection of work, said Columbia College President Lena Tran. We invite the wider community to come and enjoy this exhibition.”

All Day Prescribed Burn Operations to Begin Near Dorrington
Dorrington, CA...Fire personnel with the Stanislaus National Forest’s Calaveras Ranger District will conduct prescribed burn operations near Dorrington. Ignition of the prescribed burn is expected to begin the first week of November and will continue up to seven days as long as conditions allow. Burning is contingent on weather, fuel moisture, and air quality. All burning is monitored and conducted in accordance with state and county air quality guidelines. And closely coordinated with local county air quality control districts.

Characterized as an understory burn - a prescribed fire ignited under the forest canopy that focuses on the consumption of surface fuels but not the overstory vegetation - prescribed low-intensity fires enhances wildlife habitat, protects and maintains water quality and soil productivity, improves forest ecosystem health, and reduces the threat of uncontrolled conflagrations.

Crews hope to treat up to 33 acres with low-intensity fire. Daily area burnt will vary based on environmental conditions and smoke production. Crews on hand will consist of three engines, two hand crews, 1 water tender, one patrol unit, and one dozer in addition to various overhead personnel.

The Sierra Nevada is a fire dependent ecosystem, where fire is a critical part of the natural forest process and helps to maintain resilient forests.

Smoke may be visible from Hwy. 4. Fire managers are working closely with local air districts and the California Air Resources Board to Mitigate the effects of smoke on the public.

Please do not report as a wildland fire.
